  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN FEBRUARY Saints celebrated on the 3rd of February WELCOME! SAINT HERGEIR, APOSTLE OF SWEDEN Saint Hergeir was one of the apostles of Sweden. According to Menzel* (Symb. II. 264), Hergeir imitated the example of Elijah with the priests of Baal, by entering into a prayer competition with the pagan priests to avert rain. The priests were then showered with an even stronger downpour; but he stood dry. See Saint Herigarius (below) SAINT HERIGARIUS Saint Herigarius, (February 3), prefect of the former Swedish capital Björkö (Birka), was, according to the Bollandists * (I. 318), converted to the Christian faith by Saint Anscharius ( Saint Ansgar ), and then became such a zealous promoter of his missions, that he is considered an apostle of Sweden and numbered among the saints of that country. Nelson, knight, and was born at Shelton, near York. Being come to near forty years of age, and hearing of the college lately established at Douay, in Flanders, he went over thither, in the year 1574, in order to qualify himself there, by virtue and learning, for the priestly ministry, by which he might be of service to his native country, in reclaiming sinners from the errors of their ways. Accordingly, being judged by his superiors duly qualified, he was by them presented to holy orders, and was ordained priest at Bynche, by the archbishop of Cambray, in June, 1576, at the same time with Messieurs John Colington, Jonas Meredith. He was the man who had led  Saint Peregrine (Peregrinus) to the true faith and eventually shed his blood for him. His martyrdom happened in the 3rd century.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN FEBRUARY Saints celebrated on the 3rd of February   WELCOME! SAINT NITHARDUS [NEIDHARD], PRIEST AND MARTYR Nithardus (Nitarius), Presb. M.  This saint, a nephew of  Saint Ansgar , Archbishop of Hamburg, was sent by him to Sweden, where he worked alongside Bishop Gandberius (surnamed Simon) for the salvation of souls. He ended up being killed by the sword by a mob and thus became Sweden's first martyr. On the same occasion, the bishop and his other companions were robbed, mistreated and driven out of the country. SAINT LIASDAG, BISHOP OF RIBE, MARTYR Ribe in the 16th century  Saint Liasdag ( Liasdalgus, Liafdagus , Leofdag, Liufdag) was ordained  by Archbishop Adalag as the first Bishop of Ribe (Ripen, Ripa) in Jutland. All that is known about his youth is that he was born in Friesland.  His elevation to the episcopate occurred in the year 948, and along with him Harold was ordained Bishop of Schleswig (Sliaswich) and Reinbrandus (Reginbrond) Bishop of Aarhus (Arhusa) on the Kattegat. Liasdag is described as a famous bishop who preached the gospel to the Danes, Swedes and Norwegians.  Adam of Bremen  says of him: "Among all the bishops of antiquity, none distinguished himself so advantageously as Bishop Liasdag of Ripen, who also made himself famous through miracles and preached the gospel to the overseas peoples, namely the Sueonians and Normans (Norwegians).   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN FEBRUARY Saints celebrated on the 3rd of February WELCOME! BL. MARIA HELENA STOLLENWERK, ABBESS Helena Stollenwerk was born on November 28, 1852. Her father Hans Peter Stollenwerk died when she was little, and her mother married again. Maria Helena, who grew up on her parents' farm surrounded by numerous siblings, dreamed to join the missionaries. In 1882 she came in contact with Arnold Janssen , who resided in the Netherlands at the time. He supported her idea of the establishment of a new religious congregation of dedicated women. Meanwhile, she became a housekeeper at Arnold Janssen's "St Michael the Archangel Mission House" in Steyl. In 1884, she was joined by Hendrina Stenmanns. In 1889, Helena became of postulant of a women's congregation established by Arnold Janssen, the Missionary Sisters Servants of the Holy Spirit, and on January 17, 1892 she received the religious name Maria. SERVANT OF GOD MARY ELIZABETH LANGE, VIRGIN AND FOUNDRESS Servant of God Mother Mary Elizabeth Lange OSP (1789-1882) was born Elizabeth Clarisse Lange in Santiago de Cuba in 1789. During the Haitian Revolution her family fled to Santiago de Cuba. There she received an excellent education. She left Cuba in the early 1800s and immigrated to the United States, settling in Baltimore, Maryland by 1813. In Baltimore, she met the Sulpician priest James Nicholas Joubert, who was a native of France, at church, who was looking for teachers for children of underprivileged background. Fr Joubert found Mary Elizabeth Lange, Rosanne Boegue, Marie Balas, and Almaide Duchemin to work as teachers, who confided in him that they felt called to consecrate their lives to God and had been waiting for him to show them a way to serve him. Ancient documents show that in this role he participated in A.D. 581 in the first and 584 in the second council of Mascon; he was also present at the third council of Lyons in 582, and in 584 at the second council of Valence. He died in 586 on January 13, but is venerated on February 3.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN FEBRUARY Saints celebrated on the 3rd of February BLESSED JUSTO TAKAYAMA UKON, CONFESSOR One of the Blesseds remembered by the Church [on] 3 February, is Blessed Justo Takayama Ukon. He was born in Japan in 1552. When Blessed Justo was five years old, his father was appointed samurai for the local feudal lord. The family moved into the castle at Sawa, which overlooked the feudal lands.  In 1564, Blessed Justo’s father converted to the Catholic Faith after meeting with Portuguese missionaries and later Blessed Justo was also baptised. They became enamoured with the spiritual wisdom and intellectual depth of Catholic teaching.  Blessed Justo married Justa in 1574 and went on to have three sons (two died as infants) and one daughter. The couple built a Catholic Centre, where the faithful could gather for religious services, instruction, and meetings.
