SAINT GEBHARD, ARCHBISHOP OF SALZBURG, CONFESSOR Saint Gebhard   The name Gebhard is derived from Old High German words meaning " strong (tireless) in giving. "  Saint Gebhard ( Gebhardus ), Archbishop, Confessor, is commemorated on June 16. He was a descendant of the family of the Counts of Helffenstein, who resided between Ulm and the former Duchy of Württemberg . His father was named Chadold, his mother Azala. He had a sister, Dietberga, who married Werner of Reichersberg, the founder of Reichersberg Abbey , around 1070 or 1084. Saint Gebhard studied in Paris at the same time as the future bishops  Altmann of Passau and  Adalbero of Würzburg . In March 1055, Saint Gebhard was ordained a priest and a canon at Salzburg Cathedral by Archbishop Baldwin. During Henry III's reign he received the office of imperial chancellor.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JULY Saints celebrated on the 1st of July WELCOME! BLESSED EZZO, BISHOP OF SALZBURG At first, Blessed Ezzo was an abbot at Saint Peter, then bishop of Salzburg. He worked with much zeal in his profession. When the strength of his body waned, he practised contemplative prayer at all times until the Lord called him to his eternal reward around the year 790.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN FEBRUARY   Saints celebrated on the 16th February JOHANNES, ARCHBISHOP OF SALZBURG John (Johannes), an Englishman, consecrated by  Saint Boniface , was installed as archbishop of Salzburg in 739 (the 7th bishop in the line of succession). Around the year 754, John died in the odour of sanctity.  According to Lechner* (p. 66), where he is also called "abbot," his memory is celebrated at Saint Peter's in Salzburg on February 16; Bucelin * lists him on this day as "Saint Johannes."  On June 5 (I. 468. n. 42) in their Life of Saint Boniface,  the Bollandists * remark that this saintly apostle of the Germans appointed four bishops in Bavaria, namely our Johannes in Salzburg; in Freising, Erembrecht, who is also called Erembertus or Herebertus; in Regensburg Saint Goibaldus (S.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN FEBRUARY   Saints celebrated on the 24th of February ARNO, ARCHBISHOP OF SALZBURG Arno was the first Archbishop of Salzburg and a contemporary of the Bavarian Duke Thassilo II, who sent him to negotiate with Charlemagne. Arno's diplomatic visit was unsuccessful.  This emperor, however, became very fond of Arno and succeeded in having him, who preached Christianity to the Huns and Slavs after the example of his predecessor Virgil , receive the archbishop's pallium.  Pope Leo III  honoured him so much that he usually addressed him the "saint" in his letters. Arno died in A.D. 821 after administering his bishopric for 36 years. He left us a catalogue in which he recorded all the benefits that the Bavarian dukes had bestowed on the bishops of Salzburg (Congestum Arnonis). (Rad.) CONRAD I, ARCHBISHOP OF SALZBURG  Born about A.D. 1075 into the Abenberg-Frensdorf nobility, Conrad was raised for a clerical career at the court of Emperor Henry IV, where he was a member of the court chapel. He became a canon in Hildesheim.  THE INVESTITURE CONTROVERSY AND HIS EXILE After escorting Emperor Henry V in July 1110, Conrad sided with the Pope in the Investiture Controversy, which eventually led to his exile for several years.  He returned to Salzburg in 1121 and played an important role in the major political events of the day, including the election of Lothair of Supplinburg as King of Germany in 1125 and the papal schism of 1130 in which he played a role in the recognition of Pope Innocent II by the king. SAINT RUPERT, BISHOP OF SALZBURG  (In Austria, Saint Rupert is celebrated on 24th September, the day of the translation of his relics.) St Rupert, or Robert, was, by birth, a Frenchman, and of royal blood; but still more illustrious for his learning, and the extraordinary virtues he practised from his youth. He exercised himself in austere fasting, watching, and other mortifications; was a great lover of chastity and temperance; and so charitable as always to impoverish himself to enrich the poor.  THE PEOPLE COULD NOT BEAR THE LUSTRE OF SUCH SANCTITY His reputation drew persons from remote provinces to receive his advice and instructions. So distinguished a merit raised him to the episcopal see of Worms.  But that people, being for the most part, idolaters, could not bear the lustre of such sanctity, which condemned their irregularities and superstitions. ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN NOVEMBER   Saints celebrated on the 27th of November WELCOME! SAINT VIRGIL, BISHOP AND CONFESSOR Saint Virgil [Vergilius] (Fergal, Fergall) was born in Ireland, and distinguished at home for his learning and virtue.  Travelling into France in the reign of King Pepin, he was courteously received by that prince, who kept him two years near his person, till the see of Juvave, since called Salzburg, falling vacant, he recommended him to that bishopric, and wrote in his favour to Odilo, Duke of Bavaria, his friend and brother-in-law. VIRGIL TREMBLED AT THE PROSPECT Virgil trembled at the prospect, and, for two years, commissioned Dobda, a bishop whom he had brought with him from Ireland, to perform the episcopal functions, reserving to himself only the office of preaching and instructing, till he was compelled by his colleagues to receive the episcopal consecration in 766.  HE REBUILT THE ABBEY He rebuilt magnificently the abbey of St Peter at Salzburg...
