ST MARGUERITE BOURGEOYS, VIRGIN AND FOUNDRESS - 12 JANUARY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JANUARY Saints celebrated on the 12th of January WELCOME! SAINT MARGUERITE BOURGEOYS, VIRGIN AND FOUNDRESS Saint Marguerite Bourgeoys, a French religious sister and foundress of the Congregation of Notre Dame of Montreal in today's Canada, was born on April 17, 1620 in Troyes, France, as the sixth of twelve children. Attached to the monastery in Troyes was the confraternity of the Congregation Notre-Dame, which had been founded in 1597 by Alix Le Clerk , dedicated to the education of the poor. The canonesses of the monastery helped the poor, but remained cloistered. They were not allowed to teach outside the cloister. To reach poor young girls who could not afford to board within the cloister as students, they relied upon a sodality, whose members they would educate in both religion and pedagogy. Marguerite decided at about age 15 to join the sodality affiliated with the congregation. In 1652 Paul de Chomedey, Sieur de Maisonneuve, the Governor of the Fre...

PAUL, PRIEST AND MARTYR OF PERPIGNAN - 12 JANUARY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JANUARY Saints celebrated on the 12th of January WELCOME! PAUL, PRIEST AND MARTYR OF PERPIGNAN Paul  (Paulus)  was a monk from the Order of the Friars Minor. According to  Hueber*,  he held a doctorate in theology and was known as a particularly fervent admirer of the Blessed Virgin, who is said to have spoken to him from the Image called "Mary, Our Lady of Succour", which was later especially venerated at the monastery. This holy monk is said to have been murdered by a lecher in Perpignan in A.D. 1458 because he wanted to guide the latter's concubine away from her sin or, as others say, because he denied her absolution for lack of repentance.  It is added that his body, including the fatal wound to his head that he had sustained, had not decayed, and that his mortal remains were held in great honour by the inhabitants of Perpignan. The  Bollandists*  list Paul among the  Praetermissi . Hueber * mentions him also on...

SAINT JOHN II., BISHOP OF JERUSALEM - 12 JANUARY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JANUARY Saints celebrated on the 12th of January WELCOME! SAINT JOHN II., BISHOP OF JERUSALEM Saint John (Johannes), the 44th bishop of Jerusalem and the second of this name, is listed in the Bollandists* (Jan. I. 719) among the Praetermissi . A work by the Dutchman Johannes Palaeonydorus, i.e. of Oudewater (aqua vetus) states that the holy bishop John II died on January 12. Erroneously enough, the old "Encyclopedia of Saints" (p. 1058), and consequently also Zedler * (XIV. 1006), and the General Mart.* (p. 14) , give John II the suffix Palaeonydorus with the place Oudewater and the designation "Dutchman" (Batavus), as if this bishop John of Jerusalem himself was a Dutchman from Oudewater, surnamed Palaeonydorus . In a handwritten Horarium Sanctorum Bishop John II is mentioned on March 6. According to the Bollandist * Papebroch, this John II was the 42nd Bishop and 1st Patriarch of Jerusalem, reigning from A.D. 389 to 415. Apparently...

JOHN II., POPE - 12 JANUARY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JANUARY Saints celebrated on the 12th of January JOHN II., POPE ⬅️ Saintly Popes - Index Some martyrologists list Pope John II on January 12; others mention him on May 27. The Bollandists find no ecclesiastical veneration of him.  "MERCURIUS" He was a Roman and early cardinal priest at St Clement's. He is nicknamed Mercurius - why, or for what reason is not known.  His pontificate lasted from December 31, 532 to May 27, 535 (or May 7, 536).  THE 57th POPE Dr Karl Haas, from whose "History of the Popes" the above information is drawn, says that he was a kind and just prince of the church. The fate of his government, which was comparatively uneventful, can be looked up in appropriate sources. Haas names him as the 57th Pope. (Information from Stadler's Complete Encyclopedia of Saints, 1858)

JOHN VI., POPE - 12 JANUARY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JANUARY Saints celebrated on the 12th of January JOHN VI., POPE  ⬅️ Saintly Popes - Index Pope John VI is mentioned by the Bollandists (in the section "left out ones") on January 12. He is described as zealous for religion, love, and other virtues; but he is nowhere venerated, nor is he a martyr, as indicated by some martyrologies on January 12.  ZEALOUS FOR RELIGION, LOVE, AND OTHER VIRTUES In the life of St Agatho, Pope, on January 10, there is indeed a John (Johannes Rhegitanus), who - with some other clerics - was sent by Pope Agatho to the Greek emperors Constantinus Pogonatus, Heraclius and Tiberius. This Johannes Rhegitanus is now supposed to be our John, so named because he was then Bishop of Rhegium in Bruttiis (Reggio in Calabria).  HE SAVED THE LIFE OF ONE WHO WISHED HIM SEVERE HARM Pope John is also mentioned in Bucelin, although not in the text, but as Venerable. According to Haas, his story is as follows: He was a Greek and wa...

ST TATIANA, MARTYR - 12 JANUARY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JANUARY Saints celebrated on the 12th of January WELCOME! SAINT TATIANA, MARTYR   Saint Tatiana (commemorated on January 12), a martyr in Rome under the emperor Alexander Severus, is reckoned by the Bollandists to be identical with St Martina . IS THIS SAINTLY MARTYR ALSO KNOWN AS "MARTINA"? The reasons for this make sense. Firstly, both "Acts" have the same wording, and secondly, the name changes in the martyrologies, so that where Tatiana appears, Martina is not listed, and vice versa. Nothing is mentioned about this in Baronius (notae) .  Source: Stadler's Complete Encyclopedia of Saints THE ENTRY IN THE ROMAN MARTYROLOGY This is the entry about this holy martyr from the Roman Martyrology: "At Rome, in the time of the emperor Alexander, Saint Tatiana, martyr, who was torn with iron hooks and combs, thrown to the beasts and cast into the fire, but, having received no injury, was beheaded, and thus went to Heaven." PRAYER: G...

ST BENEDICT BISCOP, ABBOT - 12 JANUARY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JANUARY Saints celebrated on the 12th of January WELCOME! SAINT BENEDICT BISCOP, ABBOT Saint Benedict Biscop (commonly called Bennet) was nobly descended, and one of the great officers of the court of Oswi, the religious king of the Northumbers. He was very dear to his prince, and was beholden to his bounty for many fair estates, and great honours; but neither the favours of so good and gracious a king, nor the allurements of power, riches, and pleasures, were of force to captivate his heart, who could see nothing in them but dangers, and snares so much the more to be dreaded, as fraught with the power of charming.  HE BID ADIEU TO THE WORLD At the age therefore of twenty-five, an age that affords the greatest relish for pleasure, he bid adieu to the world, made a journey of devotion to Rome, and at his return devoted himself wholly to the studies of the scriptures and other holy exercises.  Some time after his return to England, Alcfrid, son of...

ST BERNARD OF CORLEONE - 12 JANUARY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JANUARY Saints celebrated on the 12th of January WELCOME! SAINT BERNARD OF CORLEONE, RELIGIOUS Originally called Filippo Latino, Saint Bernard was born in 1605 in Corleone, Italy. A shoemaker by trade, he had contact with the soldiers stationed nearby. From them he learned the art of fencing. But on one occasion, he reacted to a provocation by cutting off his adversary's arm with a sword. To flee justice and to expiate his crime, he asked for shelter in a Capuchin convent and was taken in. Conversion ensued and he decided to join the Franciscans and become a lay brother in the order.  BROTHER BERNARD And so Filippo Latini became Brother Bernard in 1632. He started leading a most penitential life as a Franciscan. But along with his stern self-discipline and fasting, he advanced by giant steps in his prayer life. Many spiritual gifts were reported of him as time passed: prophecies, wonders, miracles.   HIS ABILITY TO HEAL ANIMALS Among the mo...
