VENERABLE NICHOLAS TICHBURN AND VENERABLE THOMAS HACKSHOT, MARTYRS In 1601, I find also two other catholics put to death by the penal statutes for rescuing a priest out of the hands of an officer.  These were Nicholas Tichburn [Tichborne], gentleman, born at Hartley in Hampshire, and Thomas Hackshot, layman, born at Mursley, in Buckinghamshire.  Dr Champney, who only makes mention of the latter in his manuscript history, relates the story in this manner: Mr Hackshot, a stout young man, understanding that Mr Thomas Tichburn , priest, prisoner on account of his character, was, upon some occasion, to be conducted by one only keeper or officer, through a certain street, planted himself there, waiting for their coming, and knocking the keeper down, gave the priest opportunity to escape. SAINT GILDARD, PRIEST AND CONFESSOR - 24 AUGUST

SAINT GILDARD, PRIEST AND CONFESSOR  Saint Gildard (Gildardus, Geldardus) was a priest and confessor in the territory of Nevers at Leurcy le Bourg (Luperciacum) in France. Some sources mention him together with the abbot and confessor Patrick  (Patritius). The Mart. Parisienne* (1727 edition), for example, lists the two holy men on the same day, adding that at the time of Charles the Fat there was an abbey in the diocese of Nevers named after Saint Gildard, and that he flourished in the 7th century. It does not, however, provide any specific details of his life or work (IV. 840). SAINT EUDEAMON AND COMPANIONS, MARTYRS - 24 AUGUST

Saint Eudaemon, commemorated on August 24, was  a martyr with 37 companions from Philippopolis in Thrace, who also appears in connection with Severus and Memnon. SAINT ERCHADUS, BISHOP - 24 AUGUST

(1693) The Aberdeen Breviary * confirms the ecclesiastical veneration of this saint. It is said there that Saint Ternan  (Ternanus) ordained Erchadus (Irchardus, Erthadus, [Erchard]).a priest because of his moral purity and that he was ordained a bishop by  Pope Gregory I . On his return journey from Rome he spent three years with the Picts and freed many from the bondage of the Gauls; he then proceeded to criss-cross England and Scotland as a zealous and loving preacher of the faith, and then, anticipating his death, died happily in the Lord.  However, this tale raises the following question: Ternan lived in the 5th century, and Gregory I ascended the papal throne around the year 590, how could Erchadus have been ordained a priest by the first, and been consecrated a bishop by the second? ST OUEN, ARCHBISHOP OF ROUEN, CONFESSOR - 24 AUGUST
