SAINT AMANTIUS, BISHOP OF RODEZ Encyclopedia of Saints Saint Amantius, commemorated on November 4, was the first Bishop of Rhodez ( apud Ruthenos ) [Rodez] in France, and also a native of that city. He joined the clergy at a young age and was considered worthy for the episcopal position there because of his virtues. With tireless zeal, he worked for the conversion of the pagans, who were still very numerous in his diocese at that time, and won many for the true faith through the power of his preaching. He also possessed the gift of miracles. Among other things, the honey that was stolen from his garden is said to have turned to pitch for the thief and back into honey when it was returned.   WELCOME! ERMENGARDIS OF BERG, ABBESS Ermgard's Pectoral Ermgard van den Bergh [ Ermengardis of Berg, Irmgard] was a daughter of Adam II van den Bergh and Hedwig van Randerode. She was elected abbess of the  Elten Abbey on June 4, 1334, succeeding Mabelia van Batenborch . After Ermgard I and Ermgard II, she was the third abbess named Ermgard. Shortly after her election as abbess, a precious pectoral was made, which is now preserved in the treasury of Saint Martin's Church in Emmerich. A pectoral is a pectoral cross ( crux pectoralis in Latin) worn by cardinals, bishops, and other high-ranking clergy on a chain around their necks. Ermgard, however, used her pectoral as a clasp on her choir robe. The centre of the cross depicts  Saint Vitus  with a lion. He was the patron saint of the Elten Abbey.   SAINTS CELEBRATED IN NOVEMBER Saints celebrated on the 4th of November SAINT BIRISTAN, BISHOP OF WINCHESTER Saint Biristan (Biristanus, Brinstanus) , bishop of Winchester, was a disciple of St Grimbald. His elevation to the episcopal See of Winchester, which the pious Trithestan had resigned, was due to Biristan's excellent knowledge and virtues. A bishop of outstanding sanctity, he daily prayed the Mass for the dead and, moreover, recited the psalms in the churchyard at night for their peaceful repose.  He died on November 4, 934 without previous illness. His successor was St Elphegus the Bald (St Elphege, March 12) (El., But.) St Biristan is also commemorated on February 24 and April 22.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN NOVEMBER Saints celebrated on the 4th of November SAINT MODESTA, VIRGIN AND ABBESS Saint Modesta, the first documented abbess at the monastery of Horreum, died around A.D. 659. St Modoald, who founded the same, probably chose her for this position. Little is known about her origin, her achievements, etc. It is known, however, that St Modesta was a devotee of St Gertrude of Nivelles, who announced to her the hour of her death by an apparition. The date of her death is October 6. The Bollandists* list her on October 6, stating that she was the third abbess of the above-mentioned institute. They say that she may have been a sister of St Willibrord. In older breviaries St Modesta's name is found on July 20. The Elenchus* mention her on November 4.   SAINTS CELEBRATED IN NOVEMBER Saints celebrated on the 4th of November GREGORY, ABBOT AT BURSCHEID Gregory (Gregorius, Gregor) was abbot of the monastery at Burscheid (Porcetanum), not far from Aachen [Germany].  The following legend is quoted In Bruzen*, namely, that St Gregory, a son of the Greek emperor Nicephorus, founded this monastery. The tale continues to say that it used to be a monastery for monks, but that in 1220 Cistercian nuns moved in instead. (El.)   SAINTS CELEBRATED IN NOVEMBER Saints celebrated on the 4th of November MADULPHUS OF MALMESBURY, PRIEST  Maldulphus (also spelled Maildulphus, Maidulphus, Maydulphus) is not without fame, although his veneration seems to have fallen into oblivion.  From the  year 636 onwards, this holy and learned priest was tutor of Saint Adelelmus. The town of Malmesbury, which was formerly called Maildulfeburch, has its name from him. Its monastery was the nucleus around which the city was formed.  In Camerarius* Madulphus bears the title "saint". In the Anglican Martyrology he is found as a "hermit" on April 18. Ferrarius* states that this "Saint Madulphus" has his feast day on November 4. Some calendars commemorate him on September 28. He had a great devotion to the Mother of God. Eventually he became Bishop of Brachin (Scotland) for his great services. He is given the title "Saint".
