SAINT PETER PASCHAL, BISHOP AND MARTYR  Saint Peter Paschal was a native of Valencia, in Spain, and descended of the ancient family of the Paschals, which had edified the Church by the triumphs of five glorious martyrs, which it produced under the Moors.  Peter’s parents were virtuous and exceedingly charitable; and St Peter Nolasco often lodged with them in his travels.  ST PETER NOLASCO'S PRAYERS The birth of our saint was ascribed by them to his prayers and blessing, and the child received from him an early tincture of sincere piety.  Peter Paschal performed his studies under domestic tutors, and, having received the tonsure, was made canon at Valencia, soon after the king of Arragon had won that city from the Moors.  His preceptor was a priest of Narbonne, a doctor of divinity, of the faculty of Paris, whom our saint’s parents had ransomed from the Moors, who ha...

Their splendour shows us Your greatness, which infinitely surpasses that of all creation. In Your loving providence, You saw fit to send Your Angels to watch over us. Grant that we may always be under their protection and one day enjoy their company in heaven. Heavenly Father, You are glorified in Your Saints, for their glory is the crowning of Your gifts. You provide an example for us by their lives on earth, You give us their friendship by our communion with them, You grant us strength and protection through their prayer for the Church, and You spur us on to victory over evil and the prize of eternal glory by this great company of witnesses. BLESSED ADOLPH KOLPING, PRIEST Blessed Adolph Kolping was born on December 8, 1813 in Kerpen as the fourth of five children to the poor shepherd Peter Kolping and his wife Anna Maria Zurheyden. He suffered from frail health during his childhood. THE LIVING CONDITIONS OF THE WORKING CLASS He proved to be an able student while in school from 1820 to 1826 but his poverty prevented him from furthering his education despite his commitment to pursue additional studies.  In 1831 he travelled to Cologne as a shoemaker's assistant and was shocked with the living conditions of the working class that lived there and this proved to be definitive in influencing his decision to become a priest; he remained a shoemaker until 1841. From infancy, he fasted on Wednesday and Friday. He kept up this custom during the rest of his life. Having lost his parents when he was a young man, he gave all his goods to the poor. A noble example of his charity is seen in the fact that he secretly gave money sufficiently for a marriage dowry for three girls who were in great peril of falling into sin. HE WENT TO MYRA After having made a pilgrimage to Palestine, inspired by God, he went to Myra, the metropolis of Lycia, which had lost its bishop by death, and with no dissent but with wondrous concord, he was selected by the provincial bishops.
