Grant that we may always be under their protection and one day enjoy their company in heaven. Heavenly Father, You are glorified in Your Saints, for their glory is the crowning of Your gifts. You provide an example for us by their lives on earth, You give us their friendship by our communion with them, You grant us strength and protection through their prayer for the Church, and You spur us on to victory over evil and the prize of eternal glory by this great company of witnesses. SAINT MARUTHAS, BISHOP AND CONFESSOR Saint Maruthas was an illustrious father of the Syriac church about the end of the fourth century; and was bishop of Tagrit, in Mesopotamia, at that time subject to the Oriental empire, though near the borders of Persia.  He compiled the Acts of the martyrs who suffered in that kingdom, during the forty years of Sapor’s persecution, from 340 to 380, part of which valuable collection has been recovered and published by Stephen Assemani, in 1748.  HE WROTE SEVERAL HYMNS IN PRAISE OF THE MARTYRS St Maruthas wrote several hymns in praise of the martyrs, which together with others of St Ephrem, are inserted in the Chaldaic divine office, and are sung by the  Maronites , Jacobites, and Nestorians, who use that tongue in the church office.  St Maruthas gathered the relics of many Persian martyrs, and distributed them over the Roman em...

SAINT OSMUND, BISHOP AND CONFESSOR Saint Osmund (sometimes written Osimund, Edimund, or Ædmund) was count of Seez in Normandy, and came over with William the Conqueror, by whom he was created earl of Dorset.  His life in the world was that of a saint in all the difficult states of a courtier, soldier, and magistrate.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN DECEMBER Saints celebrated on the 4th of December WELCOME!   SAINT ANNO, ARCHBISHOP OF COLOGNE, CONFESSOR Saint Anno, a young nobleman, served in the army, but was very young when, by the exhortations of an uncle, a pious canon of Bamberg, he renounced all earthly pursuits, and dedicated himself to God in an ecclesiastical state at Bamberg.  HE DEDICATED HIMSELF TO AN ECCLESIASTICAL STATE AT BAMBERG His improvement in virtue and learning was much spoken of at court, and the emperor, Henry III. or The Black, called him near his person: and some time after nominated him provost of Goslar in Lower Saxony, and, in 1056, archbishop of Cologne.  The tears he abundantly shed during the whole ceremony of his consecration were a proof of his sincere humility and devotion.  THE FOOT OF THE ALTAR WAS HIS SOUL'S DELIGHT The foot of the altar was his soul’s delight, comfort, and refuge. SAINT JOHN DAMASCENE, PRIEST AND DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH ⬅️ Doctors of the Church - Complete List Saint John was born in Damascus about 675. After holding public office for a time, he withdrew to the monastery of Sabas near Jerusalem. He wrote ‘The Fount of Wisdom’, in which he presented a comprehensive teaching on Christian doctrine, which had great influence on later theology. He died about 750. PRAYER: Lord, may the prayers of Saint John Damascene help us, and may the true faith he taught so well always be our light and our strength.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN DECEMBER   Saints celebrated on the 4th of December WELCOME! ST BARBARA, VIRGIN AND MARTYR  According to tradition, Saint Barbara was martyred at the end of the fourth century in Antioch under the emperor Maximian.  St Barbara spent almost her entire life confined in the tower of a fortress. When he heard that she had been converted to the Christian faith even in confinement, her father, who was a pagan, not only denounced her but also condemned her to death.  SHE SPENT MOST OF HER LIFE CONFINED IN A TOWER He himself was the executioner and cut off her head with a sword. Immediately afterwards, a terrible storm arose and the executioner was incinerated by a bolt of lightning. St Barbara is usually portrayed with a tower. She is one of the  Fourteen Holy Helpers.
