SAINT ELOQUIUS, ABBOT From Ireland, Saint Eloquius travelled to France along with Fursey ,  Foillan  and  Ultan , and others. At the request of King Clovis, he built a monastery at Laigni, staffed it with monks, and presided over it as its first abbot. Some of the monks, however, were dissatisfied with his insistence on strict monastic discipline, and tried to do away with him. Thereupon he left with some of the pious friars and lived as a hermit near Grimay. He died there in 570 and was glorified by miracles both in life and after death. His body was later brought to the monastery of Baussoire (Diocese of Namur). BLESSED EDWARD COLEMAN, MARTYR Edward Coleman was a minister's son, born in Suffolk, and educated in the university of Cambridge, who afterwards become a zealous convert to the Catholic faith. According to Baker's Chronicle  [a protestant source], this gentleman was secretary to the duchess of York, a great bigot in his religion, and of a busy head. This engaged him in many projects for the restoring of popery here, or at least procuring a liberty of conscience for those of that profession. He had been engaged in a correspondence with P. Le Chaise, the French king's confessor, since the year 1674; in the course of which, he was continually entertaining him with schemes and projects for advancing the interest of the French king, and the church of Rome.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN DECEMBER Saints celebrated on the 3rd of December WELCOME! WILLIAM SHERWOOD, BISHOP OF MEATH William Sherwood, Bishop of Meath, died at Dublin, December 3, 1482. He was an English ecclesiastic who obtained the see by papal provision in April, 1460. Of his earlier life nothing is known. He soon came into conflict with Thomas Fitzgerald, eighth Earl of Desmond, who was deputy to George, Duke of Clarence, Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland. The earl accused the bishop of instigating the murder of some of his followers, and in 1464 both went to England to lay their grievances before the king. Edward IV upheld the earl, who was supported by the Irish parliament, and acquitted him of all charges of disloyalty and treasonable relations with the Irish people. But when in 1467 he was disgraced, and succeeded by the Earl of Worcester, Bishop Sherwood was suspected of leading the opposition, which finally brought the earl to the scaffold. BLESSED ANTONIO TORT REIXACH, MARTYR Blessed Antonio Tort Reixach (Reixachs) was born near Barcelona on March 28, 1895. In 1917 he married Maria Josefa Sagardia. The couple went on to have 11 children. He was a jeweller by profession, fervent Christian, charitable towards the needy, particularly devoted to the Holy Eucharist and the Virgin Mary.  During the persecution in 1936, Antonio hosted several religious people in his home, including the Bishop of Barcelona, Dr. Manuel Irurita, even though he knew that this would put him and his family at risk. On December 1, 1936, armed militiamen, after having raided his home, ransacking the house and defacing the sacred images, took him away and took him to a prison. Here, Antonio endured mistreatment and moral oppression until, on the night between 3 and 4 December, he was taken near the Montcada cemetery and was shot there. He was martyred in hatre...

SAINT GERMAN, HERMIT Saint German [Gorman ] (Germanus), commemorated on December 3, was a hermit and brother of Saint Gibrian  (Gibrianus). Together with him and five other brothers and three sisters German left his native Ireland. According to Migne *, all of these siblings are venerated as saints in the church. Once they had arrived in France, Saint Remigius of Reims , who was bishop at the time, directed them to a desolate area on the banks of the Marne for them to live hermits' lives. In complete isolation, away from worldly distractions, they completed their earthly pilgrimage. Their hermitages, located not too far from each other, made it possible for them to pay visits to one another from time to time.  Saint Gibrian was regarded as their superior because he was the eldest of them and a priest.  Migne * lists this holy hermit as Saint German. ABBO, BISHOP OF AUXERRE Abbo, Bishop of Auxerre, entered the monastery of Saint Germanus  (Saint-Germain) in this city, where he also took his vows. He later became abbot of this monastery and also bishop, as which he only reigned for two years.  Even as bishop he always wore the religious habit and did not relax any of the strictness he had acquired in his youth. He died in the 9th century, loved and revered by his flock.  When his grave was opened in the 17th century, Abbo's body was found to still be completely intact, wearing penitential clothing. Mabillon * list this holy man as “pious” (pius).   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN DECEMBER Saints celebrated on the 3rd of December WELCOME! SAINTS GUNDELIND AND EINHILDE Saint Gundelind (Gundelindis) was abbess of Niedermünster in Alsace. The daughter of Duke Adalbert of Alsace, sister of Saint Eugenia , abbess of Hohenburg, and Saint Athalia , abbess of Saint Stephen in Strasbourg, is listed by Butler (XIII. 95) together with Einhilde ¹  (Einhildis) among the saints venerated in Alsace and in parts of Switzerland. Saint  Odilia , her aunt, instructed Gundelind in the pious life, and the latter became her successor in office about the year 722. Gundelind and Einhilde lived thoroughly saintly lives, which is why after their death they were venerated as "holy virgins". Some hagiographers list these pious ladies on December 3, while Migne* mentions them on March 28. The Elenchus * has no entry on Saints Gundelind and Einhilde, which is most probably an oversight, since their veneration is beyond all doubt. Until 1542, Gundel...

  SAINT ETHELDRITHA, RECLUSE (S. Etheldritha ( Alfreda ), V. Reclusa)  Saint Etheldritha was a daughter of the Mercian king Offa, born around the year 770.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN DECEMBER Saints celebrated on the 3rd of December ANASTASIUS IV., POPE  ⬅️ Saintly Popes - Index He was crowned on July 12, 1153 and died in Rome, December 3 of the following year.  It was during his pontificate and owing to his exertions that the Pantheon was restored. He also granted special privileges to the Order of the Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem.  He is chiefly known for his attitude towards Frederick Barbarossa and recognition of Wichmann as Bishop of Magdeburg by which he terminated an ecclesiastical quarrel.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN DECEMBER Saints celebrated on the 3rd of December GEORG RATZINGER, PRIEST AND SOCIAL REFORMER  Georg Ratzinger was a political economist and social reformer, born at Rickering, near Deggendorf, in Lower Bavaria [South Germany], on April 3, 1844; he died at Munich, December 3, 1899.  HIS STUDIES Ratzinger was a pupil at the gymnasium at Passau during the years 1855-63, studied theology at Munich, 1863-67, and was ordained priest in 1867. In 1868 he received the degree of Doctor of Theology at Munich.  POLITICAL ACTIVITIES During the following years he devoted himself partly to pastoral, partly to journalistic work. In 1869 he was chaplain at Berchtesgaden; 1870-71 he was editor of the journal "Fränkisches Volksblatt" at Würzburg; 1872-74, chaplain at Landshut, then editor, until 1876, of the "Volksfreund", at Munich. SAINT MACNISIUS, BISHOP  [First Bishop of Connor in Ireland.]   According to Colgan, Saint Macnisius [St MacNissi/MacNessi] was a disciple of St Olcan, who was disciple of St Patrick, and died on November 3, 513.  ACCORDING TO COLGAN, HE WAS A DISCIPLE OF ST OLCAN But, in the Annals of Tigernach, and in the ancient scholiast of the Aengusian Martyrology, he is mentioned under the 3rd of September.  The annals of Innisfallen place his death in 506.
