  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 25th of March WELCOME! SAINT ALFWOLD, BISHOP OF SHERBURN The name Alfwold has Old German roots and is derived from Alf ,  meaning "helper," and walt (wold) , meaning " mighty " - thus, "mighty helper."  Saint Alfwold (Alfwoldus) was Bishop of Sherborne ( Schireburnia ) in England and, prior to his elevation to this episcopal see, a monk at Winchester. He is said to have been a great devotee of Saints Swithun and Cuthbert (whose tomb he opened so that he might express his sentiments even more fervently). At a time when luxury and extravagance in banqueting were rife, Alfwold lived in great poverty; he ate only from a wooden bowl and drank very weak beer - so much so that a certain unnamed priest could not speak of his virtues without shedding tears. At his return home, his zeal for his religion, caused him to be apprehended. Judita was the daughter of a certain Rudbertus  (Rutpert, Rotpert), a nobleman who lived in Upper Bavaria with his wife Hadewig (Hadwig). He was one of the people who supported the blessed Herluca (Herluka) in Epfach.  Judita was a maiden of great beauty, brought up quite piously by her parents; but she did not want to take Blessed Herluca's advice to consecrate herself to Christ in perpetual virginity.  One Septuagesima Sunday after Vespers in the church, however, she and Blessed Herluca remained in the church. In the Hub. Men .*, on March 19, he appears with the name of Gratianus Moysant , and is said of him that in France - around the year 1562 - he and some of his confreres perished due to the rage of the heretics. SAINTS BARONTUS AND DESIDERIUS, HERMITS   Saints Barontus (Barontius) and Desiderius were hermits at Pistoia (Pistorium) in Italy. THE VANITY OF EARTHLY THINGS St Barontus (French Baront ), who is called Barontius in the Roman Martyrology, was of a noble family in Berry, and entered into marriage and had a son, named Aydoaldus (Agloald). After realising the vanity of things, he left the world and entered the monastery at Lonrey (Longoretum), also called St-Cyrane en Brain, as a monk.  From there he and his son, who had also entered the Order, went with approval of his abbot to Italy and settled in a solitude of Tuscany. He was the younger son of Count Eberhard V (Eppo) of Nellenburg and Hedwig (Haduwig) of Egisheim. He married [Blessed] Ita around 1030/1035; she was descended from the Counts of Kirchberg. He supported the Reichenau monastery with endowments.  HIS PROJECTS In 1044, assisted by his widowed mother, he founded the Sponheim monastery on the Feldberg not far from Sponheim on her own property.  For themselves, they founded the Schwabenheim monastery in 1040 in today's Pfaffen-Schwabenheim, where Haduwig retired.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 25th of March WELCOME! SAINT CAMMIN, ABBOT  Among the most celebrated saints of Ireland, published by Usher, is placed Saint Cammin [Caimin], who in his youth retired from the noise of the world into the island of Inish-Kealtair, in the lake of Derg-Derch, or Dergid, in the confines of Thomond and Galway.  Here several disciples resorting to him, he built a monastery, which out of veneration for his extraordinary sanctity, was long very famous among the Irish. The church of that place still retains, from him, the name of Tempul-Cammin.  His happy death is placed in the Inis-Fallen annals about the year 653.
