SAINT MELANIA THE YOUNGER Melania was of a most noble Spanish family, though descended of a Roman pedigree, and a relation of St Paulinus of Nola, second to no one in Aquitain and Spain in riches or nobility. SHE WAS LEFT A WIDOW AT AGE TWENTY-THREE Being married young, she was left a widow at twenty-three years of age. Upon the death of her husband she said to God: "Now, O Lord, I shall be at liberty to devote myself without distraction to thy service." SAINT LOUIS OF GRENADA, RELIGIOUS [On December 31,] one of the saints celebrated by the Church is St Louis of Grenada. He was born in Spain in 1504 and became a Dominican. St Louis was a great preacher and writer, and in his works he wanted to make the interior life accessible to all members of the Church, not just to priests and religious. St Louis explained that performing certain fundamentals would make Church members more like Christ: Mental prayer, cultivation of virtue, contempt for the things of this world, contemplation of God in nature, obedience to the commandments, participation in the sacraments and imitation of the saints. SAINT SYLVESTER I., POPE ⬅️ Saintly Popes - Index Saint Sylvester became Bishop of Rome in 314, at the time of Emperor Constantine, whom he may have baptised. This was at the time of the Donatist schism and the Arian heresy, against which he defended the Church. He died in 336. PRAYER: Lord, help and sustain your people by the prayers of Pope Sylvester. Guide us always in this present life and bring us to the joy that never ends.
