SAINT ROSINA, VIRGIN AND MARTYR The sign at the Rosina Chapel, text translated below¹ Saint Rosina (March 11), is listed as a "virgin and martyr" in an ancient handwritten calendar of saints, albeit without an original source being provided. Unless it was supported by an older martyrology of some authority, this calendar entry would be quite worthless to us. Further research led us to a certain list compiled according to Nadasius and Sautel ( annus sacer ), also handwritten, There, Saint Rosina is mentioned as just a "virgin" (rather than "virgin and martyr"). Upon seeking out the sources the latter list was supposed to be based upon, we discovered that she could not be found in Nadasius ' work; whether she is mentioned by Sautel , we do not know, as his book was not available to us. SAINT EUTHYMIUS, BISHOP OF SARDIS, MARTYR - 11 MARCH

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 11th of March WELCOME! SAINT EUTHYMIUS, BISHOP OF SARDIS, MARTYR Most probably, Saint Euthymius was born during the last years of Emperor Constantinus Copronymus' reign. He became a monk, and some years later was raised to the episcopal Chair of Sardis in Lydia under Constantius and his mother Irene. As bishop, he excelled at the general council of Nicaea in 787, which was assembled against the iconoclasts. He had to go into exile three times, the last time to the promontory of Akrita in Bithynia, where he was imprisoned and, by order of the emperor, and beaten so cruelly with ox sinews that he died eight days later. The Bollandists * state A.D. 840 as the year of his death, Butler * 820, and others 828. The Roman Martyrology* mentions the saint as a martyr on the above day, while in the Greek Meneae * feature his name on December 26. EUNICE, MOTHER OF SAINT TIMOTHY - 11 MARCH

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 11th of March WELCOME! EUNICE, MOTHER OF SAINT TIMOTHY On March 11, we also remember Eunice, the mother of Saint Timothy (Timotheus). She was a Jewess by birth, but married a Gentile man, probably in the city of Lystra in Lycaonia. She soon converted to Christianity, and also gave her son Timothy, who later became a student of the apostle Saint Paul, a pious upbringing, which is why Eunice was praised by the apostle, along with Lois, the grandmother of Saint Timothy (2 Timothy 1:5). Nothing else is known about her. SAINT VIGILIUS, BISHOP OF AUXERRE - 11 MARCH

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 11th of March SAINT VIGILIUS, BISHOP OF AUXERRE Initially, this holy bishop of Auxerre was well liked at the royal court due to his noble family background. Saint Vigilus' predecessor had been Saint Palladius, whom he succeeded in A.D. 661 or 663. In his new role, Saint Vigilius built a monastery with an attached church in honour of the Holy Mother of God, which he provided with rich income because of the hospital connected to it (xenodochium pauperum ibi esse praecepit). Since he defended the clergy against the acts of violence of the majordomus Varaton (Waracho Warado), the latter had him attacked and killed on his way home from the royal court in the Forest of Compiegne (Compendium) . In 1468, Raphael died in such great sanctity that the paperwork containing his life and details were sent to Rome and examined there for the purpose of initiating beatification. LOIS, GRANDMOTHER OF ST TIMOTHY - 11 MARCH

LOIS, GRANDMOTHER OF ST TIMOTHY Lois was the grandmother of Saint Timothy , disciple of St Paul, who commends her and her daughter Eunice for their 'unfeigned faith' (2 Tim. 1:5). The Bollandists (hagiographers) list these pious women on March 11 and in their article on St Timothy on January 24, they express their astonishment that both holy women are neither found in the Greek nor in the Latin lists as "saints". STRATAEAS On the feast of St Polycarp they also mention St Strataeas, another son of Eunice, daughter of Lois. This St Strataeas is therefore a brother of St Timothy , and it is said of him that the holy apostle St Paul , on his journey to Jerusalem, coming from Galatia, spent some time at Strataeas' place in Smyrna, who was listening to him in Pamphilia. BLESSED THOMAS ATKINSON, PRIEST AND MARTYR ⬅️ 85 Martyrs of England and Wales Blessed Thomas Atkinson was born in the East Riding of Yorkshire, was ordained priest at Reims, and returned to his native country in 1588. HE WAS UNWEARIED IN VISITING HIS FLOCK We are told that he was unwearied in visiting his flock, especially the poor, and became so well known that he could not safely travel by day. He always went afoot until, having broken his leg, he had to ride a horse. THEY FOUND A PAIR OF BEADS AND THE FORM OF AN INDULGENCE ON HIM At the age of seventy he was betrayed, and carried to York with his host, Mr Vavasour of Willitoft, and some members of the family. A pair of beads, and the form of an indulgence were found upon him, and he was condemned to be hanged, drawn, and quartered. Antonia of Florence - fresco After the death of her husband, Blessed Antonia of Florence entered the Third Order of Saint Francis . Later, on the advice of Saint John of Capistrano of Aquila she proceeded to join the Poor Clares. HER PUBLIC VENERATION FROM TIME IMMEMORIAL WAS CONFIRMED IN 1847 Bl. Antonia died on March 11, 1472, at the age of 71. Migne* remarks that the cause of her canonisation is in progress in Rome. Her public veneration from time immemorial was confirmed on September 11 , 1847, which is why she is counted among the "blessed". ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 11th of March WELCOME! ULRICH, FIRST ABBOT OF KAISHEIM Udalricus (commemorated on March 11 and February 19). This Udalricus [Ulrich], was the first abbot of Kaisersheim (Caesarea)[Kaisheim, in Bavaria, South Germany], which was founded around the year 1135. He was a pious man who kindly but strictly enforced rigorous monastic discipline. He is styled a "Blessed" by Henriquez *. A FATHER AND ROLE MODEL The Cistercian Order was then in its first heyday. The pious abbot had come with twelve monks from the monastery of Lützel (Lucella) in Alsace. He was not only their father and role model, but also built up the whole area through his energetic zeal in promoting devotion, worship, the maintenance of strict monastic discipline, industriousness and renunciation. SAINT CONSTANTINE, MARTYR Saint Constantine [St Constantine II] is said to have been a British king, who, after the death of his queen, resigned the crown to his son, and became a monk in the monastery of St David. HE JOINED ST COLUMBA It is added that he afterwards went into North Britain, and joined St Columba in preaching the gospel amongst the Picts, who then inhabited a great part of what is now called Scotland. HE FOUNDED A MONASTERY AT GOVANE He founded a monastery at Govane, near the river, Cluyd, converted all the land of Cantire to the faith of Christ, and died a martyr by the hands of infidels, towards the end of the sixth century. HE DIED A MARTYR He was buried in his monastery of Govane, and divers churches were erected in Scotland under his invocation. SAINT SOPHRONIUS, PATRIARCH OF JERUSALEM, CONFESSOR Saint Sophronius was a native of Damascus, and made such a progress in learning that he obtained the name of the Sophist. He lived twenty years near Jerusalem, under the direction of John Moschus, an holy hermit, without engaging himself in a religious state. THEY TRAVELLED TO EGYPT These two great men visited together the monasteries of Egypt, and were detained by St John the Almoner, at Alexandria, about the year 610, and employed by him two years in extirpating the Eutychians, and in reforming his diocese. John Moschus wrote there his Spiritual Meadow which he dedicated to Sophronius. He made a collection in that book of the edifying examples of virtue which he had seen or heard of among the monks, and died shortly after at Rome.
