  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN DECEMBER Saints celebrated on the 29th of December WELCOME! SAINT LUCIA, ABBESS  Saint Lucia, commemorated on December 29, was an abbess in Trier [Treves], specifically at the Trier convent of Horreen ( Horreum ). BL. HERMANN, ABBOT OF ST. PANTALEON - 29 DECEMBER

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN DECEMBER Saints celebrated on the 29th of December WELCOME! BLESSED HERMANN, ABBOT OF ST. PANTALEON On December 29 and December 30 we remember Hermann (Hermannus) , Abbot of St. Pantaleon in Cologne (Germany). He is listed in the Elenchus * of the Bollandists * and also mentioned by Bucelin * on December 29. Lechner's* work features this holy abbot on December 30; both the latter and Bucelin * call him Blessed Hermann . A Count of Zütphen by birth, he was known as "the Humble." ST JESSE, SHEPHERD - 29 DECEMBER

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN DECEMBER Saints celebrated on the 29th of December WELCOME! SAINT JESSE, SHEPHERD  Saint Jesse, Hebrew Ishai, is listed in the Elenchus * on December 29, probably for the reason that his famous son David 's feast is celebrated on that day.  According to the book of Ruth in the Bible (4:21, 22), Jesse was a son of Obed and grandson of the rich Boaz (Booz), who descended from Phares, whom Judas had fathered with Tamar. Boaz was related to Elimelech, who, at a time of famine, had emigrated to the Moabite area with his wife Naomi (Noomi) and his two sons Mahalon and Chelion (Ruth 1:1 ff.). There the sons took the Moabites Orpha and Ruth as wives, but died childless, whereupon Naomi returned to Bethlehem with her daughter-in-law Ruth. She caused her cousin Boaz to enter into the leviathan marriage with Ruth, from which Obed, the father of Jesse and Grandfather of David, sprung. PETER THE VENERABLE, ABBOT - 29 DECEMBER

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN DECEMBER Saints celebrated on the 29th of December WELCOME! PETER THE VENERABLE, ABBOT Peter the Venerable    Petrus Venerabilis   ("Peter the Venerable"), theologian and ascetic of the Middle Ages, born in 1092 or 1094, was most probably a descendant of the family of the Lords of Montboissier in Auvergne. He died in 1155. As abbot of Cluny (since 1122) he restored dilapidated monastic discipline. His loving disposition, which made him warn the church against the use of violence in matters of faith, made him the protector of the unfortunate Abelard. Peter the Venerable left behind letters and writings against Petrobrusians (a group of heretics), Jews and Saracens ("Two books against Mohammedanism", German, Leipzig, 1896). REGINBERT, ABBOT - 29 DECEMBER

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN DECEMBER Saints celebrated on the 29th of December WELCOME! REGINBERT, ABBOT Sankt Blasien   Venerable Reginbert (Reginbertus, Regimbertus) is the founder of the famous St Blase Abbey (Abtei St Blasien), formerly called Albzell (Cella Alba), in the Black Forest. In 945, the half-ruined monastery that already existed there was transformed by him into a handsome building. He also bequeathed his entire heritage in Zurichgau to the new church.  Venerable Reginbert was a Baron of Seldenburen (Sellenburen), privy councilor of Emperor Otto I and a brave soldier who had lost a hand in the turmoil of battle. At his request, the monastery came under the direct protection of the empire. (The document was only issued in 983.) According to Mabillon *, he was the Rambertus of whom it is said in the hermitage's records: "In 959 Rambertus took the monk's habit." BOSO, BISHOP OF MERSEBURG - 29 DECEMBER

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN DECEMBER Saints celebrated on the 29th of December WELCOME! BOSO, BISHOP OF MERSEBURG Boso (commemorated on December 29), Bishop of Merseburg, was a Bavarian by birth. He contributed much to the conversion of the Slavs and Hungarians. Raderus * relates that Boso studied in Regensburg at Saint Emmeram's and, according to the same writer, he died in the year 900. Buc. Sppl .* lists Boso as   "venerable". BL. GERARD CAGNOLI, HERMIT - 29 DECEMBER

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN DECEMBER Saints celebrated on the 29th of December WELCOME! BLESSED GERARD CAGNOLI, HERMIT Gerard ( Gerardus, Geraldus ), from Valenza in Piedmont (on the river Po), descended from the noble Cagnoli family. In his youth he looked after his sick mother as a good son. When she had died, Gerard put on the hermit's garb and after several pilgrimages, he lived as a hermit near Mount Etna in Sicily.  In his 40th year he entered the Order of  Saint Francis of Assisi . Gerard was very strict with himself, and his extraordinary severity against the flesh was made even more extreme by fasting and mortification of every kind. On the other hand, he and his fellow brothers were indescribably mild and gentle. Gerard possessed the gift of miracles. Before his end he was honoured by an apparition of the Blessed Virgin. SAINT ODEWALD, ABBOT OF LINDISFARNE Saint Odewald (Odewaldus) was an abbot of Lindisfarne in England and a confessor, who died around A.D. 806. This holy abbot is also commemorated on December 7. The Roman Martyrology states:  "At Arles, the birthday of Saint Trophimus, mentioned by Saint Paul in his Epistle to Timothy. Being consecrated bishop by that Apostle, he was the first sent to preach the Gospel of Christ in that city. From his preaching as from a fountain, according to the expression of Pope Saint Zosimus , all Gaul received the waters of salvation."
