  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN APRIL Saints celebrated on the 10th of April WELCOME! VENERABLE ENGELBERT, ABBOT OF SAINT BLAISE   Venerable Engelbert, Abbot, is remembered on April 10. A descendant of the distinguished Volkersdorff family in Styria, he chose monastic life and was elevated to abbot of Saint Blaise Abbey (Sankt Blasien) because of his learning and virtue. Each year he withdrew into solitude to a mountain cave for a certain period to devote himself undisturbed to contemplating heavenly matters. A fervent devotee of the Blessed Virgin Mary, he composed a beautiful hymn in her praise, and penned other edifying writings. BLESSED PATERNUS, RECLUSE AT PADERBORN Paderborn Cathedral, 1892 Paternus is called "blessed" by Papebrochius *, and "saint" by Trithemius*, Arnold Wion, Menardus*, Bucelin*, Ferrarius *, and several other hagiographers. In Paderborn he was always numbered among the saints of the city.  This holy man was a recluse at the Addinghofen monastery, which had been built by  Meinwerk (Meinwercus )  from 1015 onwards along with a magnificent church for the Benedictine Order in Paderborn.  Paternus, a Scot by birth, was among the first residents of this monastery. Separated from the convent, he wanted to be locked in a neighbouring cell for love of solitude. In this seclusion he lived for several years.  On the inspiration of God, he once announced to the bishop and all the inhabitants of Paderborn that the city would be destroyed by a terrible fire within 30 days unless everyone...

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN APRIL Saints celebrated on the 10th of April ESKIL, ARCHBISHOP OF LUND This holy Eskil (Eskilus) was of royal lineage. He studied in Hildesheim when, at one point, he became so ill that he was considered at death's door. Through the intercession of the blessed Virgin, however, Eskil - most wonderfully - made a full recovery. He later became Archbishop of Lund, Legate of the Apostolic See and Primate of Denmark. As such, in A.D. 1163, he authored the Scanian Church Law, through which the Nordic Church also gained internal stability. With heroic courage, Bishop Eskil fought for rights and freedom for the Church. In return for his endeavours he had to endure many hardships by the secular world - he was even imprisoned and later exiled. Eskil resigned his episcopal office in the end, became a monk at Clairvaux, and died in 1181. Miracles in life and after his death testify to the godliness of his conduct. (Buc.) (1693) Étienne de Barquel (Stephanus), was a martyr of the Franciscan Order. In A.D. 1569 he was murdered by the Calvinists for his faith at his monastery at Seez along with all the religious there. GREGORY XIII, POPE  ⬅️ Saintly Popes - Index Ugo Buoncompagni was born at Bologna, January 7. 1502; he died at Rome, April 10, 1585. He studied jurisprudence at the University of Bologna, from which he was graduated at an early age as doctor of canon and of civil law. Later, he taught jurisprudence at the same university, and had among his pupils the famous future cardinals, Alessandro Farnese, Cristoforo Madruzzi, Otto Truchsess von Waldburg, Reginald Pole, Carlo Borromeo, and Stanislaus Hosius.  In 1539 he came to Rome at the request of Cardinal Parizzio, and Paul III appointed him judge of the Capitol, papal abbreviator, and referendary of both signatures. In 1545 the same pope sent him to the Council of Trent as one of his jurists.  On his return to Rome he held various offices in the Roman Curia under Julius III (1550-1555), who also appointed him prolegate of the Campagna in 1555. ...

SAINT FULBERT OF CHARTRES, BISHOP  [Saint Fulbert, Bishop of Chartres, was] born between 952 and 962; he died on April 10, 1028 or 1029. Mabillon and others think that he was born in Italy, probably at Rome; but Pfister , his latest biographer, designates as his birthplace the Diocese of Laudun in the present department of Gard in France.  ST SYLVESTER II WAS HIS TEACHER He was of humble parentage and received his education at the school of Reims, where he had as teacher the famous Gerbert who in 999 ascended the papal throne as Sylvester II.  THE MOST FAMOUS SEAT OF LEARNING IN FRANCE In 990 Fulbert opened a school at Chartres which soon became the most famous seat of learning in France and drew scholars not only from the remotest parts of France, but also from Italy, Germany, and England.  Fulbert was also chancellor of the church of Chartres and treasurer of St Hilary's at Poiti...

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN APRIL Saints celebrated on the 10th of April WELCOME! BLESSED BONIFACE ZUKOWSKI, MARTYR  ⬅️ 108 Martyrs of World War II From a farming background, Blessed Boniface Zukowski (Zukovski) felt called to religious life and joined the Order of Friars Minor Conventual in Niepokalanow, Poland.  HIS ARREST He assisted St Maximilian Kolbe's work. During the Second World War, he was arrested for his publishing activities; he was first incarcerated in Warsaw, and afterwards transferred to Dachau (together with Brother Timothy). He ministered to fellow inmates.  HIS HOLY DEATH Blessed Boniface died of pneumonia as a consequence of forced labour and the conditions in the concentration camp. His holy death occurred on April 10, 1942. Bl. Boniface's feast day is April 10, and he is also commemorated on June 12 (the joined feast of the 108 Martyrs of WW II).
