ST MATTHEW AYARIGA, MARTYR - 15 FEBRUARY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN FEBRUARY   Saints celebrated on the 15th of February WELCOME! SAINT MATTHEW AYARIGA, MARTYR Saint Matthew Ayariga (left) Saint Matthew Ayariga is one of only 21 people officially recognized as 21st-century martyrs by both the Coptic Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church. But he has a further distinction: He is the only one among this group who was not a Coptic Orthodox Christian .  Originally from Ghana, Matthew was working in Libya when he found himself abducted by the Islamic terror organisation ISIS along with twenty of his coworkers, who were  Coptic Orthodox Christians  from various villages in Egypt. The 21 captives were led to the shores of the Mediterranean Sea in order for their kidnappers to film an Islamic indoctrination video. This repulsive propaganda film denounced them as followers of the Cross. They were told that if they publicly renounced the Christian faith and converted to Islam they would live. None did, therefor...

ST GEORGIA, VIRGIN - 15 FEBRUARY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN FEBRUARY   Saints celebrated on the 15th of February WELCOME! SAINT GEORGIA, VIRGIN Monastery yard in the snow Saint Georgia (commemorated on February 15 ; also  March 11 and September 25 ) was a pious virgin whose memory - as stated in the  Roman Martyrology * - is celebrated in Auvergne ( apud Arvernos ). According to  Saint Gregory of Tours , she lived in seclusion and "consecrated every day to the Lord in fasting and prayer." It so happened that, after her passing, when her body was about to be carried to the church of the nearest town, many doves flew along and accompanied the corpse; during the funeral, however, they remained on the church roof and then flew up to heaven. Later writers transformed the doves into angels, thereby completing the "heavenly funeral rite." The time in which she lived is unknown; since even  Saint Gregory of Tours  could only recount legends about her (he explicitly uses the word " fertur " ...

ANNO, BISHOP OF MINDEN - 15 FEBRUARY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN FEBRUARY   Saints celebrated on the 15th of February WELCOME! ANNO, BISHOP OF MINDEN Anno (or Hanno) was the 26th Bishop of Minden and a diligent collector of saints' relics. He died in the year 1185, the day after the Feast of  Saint Valentine (on February 15 ). Some refer to him as "Saint," others as "Blessed"; yet his name appears in none of the various martyrologies - indeed, not even Bucelin *, who is otherwise very generous with such titles, accords him one. ST SIGFRID, BISHOP AND CONFESSOR - 15 FEBRUARY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN FEBRUARY Saints celebrated on the 15th of February WELCOME! SAINT SIGFRID, BISHOP AND CONFESSOR The holy bishop and confessor  Sigfrid of Wexiö (Vexio [Växjö]) on the Heiligensee (Saints' Lake [Helgasjön]) in Sweden was an Englishman by birth, of noble blood, but of an even nobler heart. According to the martyrologies, Sweden owes him its conversion to Christianity, which is why he is also called their apostle (of the Goths, Swedes, and Normans).  He landed there at the beginning of the 11th century under King Olaf (Olaus) and worked with great effort to spread the Gospel until his blessed end. The cathedral church of Wexiö [Växjö] is said to have been built by him. One day, as he was celebrating Holy Mass, he saw Jesus present in the form of a handsome boy, just as he was showing the Holy Host to the faithful prior to Holy Communion. Among his assistants, the  Bollandists * list the holy chaplain Aschillus , who was consecrated bishop by...

REGINALD GARRIGOU-LAGRANGE, PRIEST AND WRITER - 15 FEBRUARY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN FEBRUARY Saints celebrated on the 15th of February WELCOME! REGINALD GARRIGOU-LAGRANGE, PRIEST AND WRITER  On February 21, 1877, the priest and influential writer Reginald Marie Garrigou-Lagrange OP was born in Auch, near Toulouse, France, the son of a Catholic civil servant. In 1896, he enrolled at the University of Bordeaux. While studying medicine at Bordeaux, he experienced a religious conversion after reading Life, Science, and Art by Ernest Hello (1828-85). He explained it thus: I was able to glimpse how the doctrine of the Catholic Church is the absolute Truth concerning God and his intimate life and concerning the human person, his origin and his supernatural destiny. I saw in a wink of an eye that it was not a truth relative to our time and place but an absolute truth that will not change but will become more and more apparent up to the time when we see God face to face. A ray of light shone before my eyes and made clear the words of the Lor...

SAINT EUSEUS, HERMIT - 15 FEBRUARY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN FEBRUARY Saints celebrated on the 15th of February WELCOME! SAINT EUSEUS, HERMIT Saint Euseus flourished in the 14th century. A native of Serravalle in Piedmont, he lived as a hermit on a nearby rock, subsisting on shoemaking, which is why he is usually depicted surrounded with shoemaking tools and is considered a patron saint of cobblers . A church was built for him on that lofty place where he lived.  It is probably this Saint Euseus, of whom  Menzel *  (II. 33) says that three lilies grew out of his grave, although - instead of Euseus - his register of saints lists Enseus . This latter saint name does not occur in any other saints' catalogue, therefore this spelling in the register must have popped up due to an erroneous reading.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN FEBRUARY Saints celebrated on the 15th of February WELCOME! SAINT SIGFRID OF SWEDEN, BISHOP (Saint Sigefride, or  Sigfrid , Bishop, Apostle of Sweden.) His zealous ancestors having received the light of faith, propagated the same throughout all the northern provinces of Europe.  Saint Anscarius ( Ansgar )  had planted the faith in Sweden, in 830; but it relapsed soon after into idolatry. King Olave Scobcong entreated King Edred, who died in 951, to send him missionaries to preach the gospel in this country. Sigefride, an eminent priest of York, undertook that mission, and on June 21, 950, arrived at Wexiow [Växjö], in Gothland, in the territory of Smaland. He first erected a cross, then built a church of wood, celebrated the divine mysteries, and preached to the people.  Twelve principal men of the province were converted by him, and one who died, was buried after the Christian manner, and a cross placed upon his grave.
