SAINT BILIUS, BISHOP AND MARTYR - 23 JUNE

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JUNE Saints celebrated on the 23th of June SAINT BILIUS, BISHOP AND MARTYR Saint Bilius - Billy in French - was a bishop and martyr at Vannes in France (in Brittany). He took over the government of that diocese in A.D. 882 and was crowned with martyrdom in 895, probably because of his defence of ecclesiastical rights.  According to the French writers, our Saint was chaplain to King Alanus of Brittany (according to Migne *, he was chaplain to Queen Morone, wife of King Judicael of Brittany), and apparently was buried in the parish of Planturn (Plandran), in a little church there. SAINT ALENA, VIRGIN AND MARTYR - 17 JUNE

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JUNE Saints celebrated on the 17th of June SAINT ALENA, VIRGIN AND MARTYR Alena descended from princely but pagan parents. Her father Leoaldus was Lord of Dielbeck and her mother's name was Hildegard. The first desire to know the Christian religion awoke in St Alena, when her father once said mockingly that he had attended the Christian Mass in Vorst (Voorst, Forestum), a town in Brabant.  From that time on she went to Church. Her father had soldiers catch her on her way home who severely mistreated her, tearing off her arm, as a result of which she died, around the year 640.  Miraculously, an angel brought this arm to Voorst and put it on the altar. When the residents realised what had happened, they took Alena's body and buried it in their chapel, which was later consecrated in her honour.  Her tomb was glorified by many miracles. The faithful invoked her in times of need and venerated her as their patroness, and invoked her intercession especially

St Agia is also commemorated on September 1 and October 9. SAINT VIRUS, HERMIT - 15 JUNE

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JUNE Saints celebrated on the 15th of June SAINT VIRUS, HERMIT Saint Virus (Vonga), who also occurs under the names Vius and Vio, died about the year 585 as a hermit in Brittany. A bishop of Armagh, he left this seat voluntarily to live in perpetual penance at Treguennec, bishopric of Quimper. SAINT ETTO, BISHOP - 10 JULY

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN FEBRUARY   Saints celebrated on the 14th of February SAINT MANCHAN THE LEPER ⬅️ Litany of the Irish Saints Saint Manchan, nicknamed "the leper," (Manchanus leprosus) is listed in several Irish martyrologies. He is also called Mochuocus . According to Colgan *, he was abbot of Mohill (Methal, Molthensis) in the county of Longfort. Kelly * adds, "with his Companions" whose number is given as 150, which perhaps indicates that they suffered martyrdom. The year of his death is unknown. St Manchan is also commemorated on October 21. In Kelly *, for example, we read in the Donegal calendar (on page 36) : "Seachnall, i.e. Secundinus." St Seachnall was bishop of Dunseachlin or Dunsaughlin in Meath, and an assistant and friend of   St Patrick   (Patritius) , whose nephew he was. SAINT MACHABEO OF ARMAGH, ABBOT - 31 MARCH

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 31st of March SAINT MACHABEO OF ARMAGH, ABBOT ⬅️ Litany of the Irish Saints [Saint Machabeo ] (Maccabaeus, Machabaesus) was Abbot of St Peter and Paul in Armagh. Colgan * considers him the successor of St Imar,  his tutor, who died in A.D. 1135. According to this source, his name is Moichabeus, i.e. servant of Mochai . In Kelly * (p. 110) he is also called Machari and Mochari . German * calls him a tower of piety and gentleness, an ark of wisdom and learning, a bulwark of prudence and steadfastness. He died around the year 1175. SAINT MUNIS, BISHOP - 1 AUGUST

SAINT MYROPS, MARTYR - 13 JULY

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JULY Saints celebrated on the 13th of July SAINT MYROPS, MARTYR Saint Myrops is not to be confused with Myrope. Our Saint is known as "the myrrh giver" because she regularly collected a moist substance from the interred bodies of the apostles and martyrs and by means of this fluid healed the sick. She is said to have suffered martyrdom for her Christian faith on the island of Chios under the emperor Decius. The Praeses Numerianus had her beaten until she gave up the ghost. SAINT KIARA, VIRGIN - 16 OCTOBER

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN OCTOBER Saints celebrated on the 16th of October WELCOME! SAINT KIARA, VIRGIN ⬅️ Litany of the Irish Saints Saint Kiara was of a noble Irish family from Muskerry, and lived for some time with her maidens at Techtelle, in the county of Westmeath. This place had been given to her by  St Fintan Munn. St Kiara later founded a monastery a few miles southwest of Cork, which was named Kilkere after her. There she is buried and also venerated.  St Kiara is also known as Kyaer, Kyear, Cera, Cier, Ciar, Cyra). The Bollandists * mention her in the Life of St Munnn or Fintan, a disciple of St Columba (Columcille). In Dr Kelly's Mart. Taml.* she is called Cere filia Duibhrea , and St Fintan is referred to as Finntan Mac Tulchan i. SAINT MEL, BISHOP OF ARDAGH - 6 FEBRUARY

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN FEBRUARY Saints celebrated on the 6th of February SAINT MEL, BISHOP OF ARDAGH ⬅️ Litany of the Irish Saints Saint Mel (Melchno) flourished in the 5th century. One of the earliest of the Irish saints, he was a nephew of  St Patrick , and by him appointed first Bishop of Ardagh. There Saint Mel built a great monastery and governed it as Abbot. It was he who gave the veil of religion to Saint Brigid. He lived till towards the close of the fifth century. Ardagh Diocese venerates him as its Patron Saint. Probably, says Dr Kelly *, this St Cianan was put in charge of the parish Plouguerneau (Diocese Saint-Pol-de-Leon) by his countryman, St Jovinus (Joava). SAINT MOCHONNA - 13 MAY

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MAY Saints celebrated on the 13th of May SAINT MOCHONNA ⬅️ Litany of the Irish Saints Mochonna is listed as a "saint" in the Bollandists'  Mart. Taml .* and with the addition: Essa-Mac-Neire in Kelly *. In the same source, the name appears once more on March 8 with the location: Daire (Derry) and also on May 3, further on March 27, mentioning the place: Maighi Eo (Mayo). On May 13 and June 7, he occurs yet again, and on May 19 with the detail: Chille Comairthe . He may well be the same person as Saint Mochua. Colgan * reckons he may be St Dachonnas. SAINT LACTAN, ABBOT - 19 MARCH

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 19th of March SAINT LACTAN, ABBOT Saint Lactan (Lactinus) was a 7th century abbot. Born near Cork, it is said that a miraculous spring provided the water for his Baptism, and that, when fifteen years old, he was taken by his Guardian Angel to Saint Comgall, the great Abbot of Ben-Chor.  He was there instructed by Saint Molua in Sacred Science, and appointed by Saint Comgall to make other foundations, over one of which, at a place called Achadh-Ur (now Freshford, County Kilkenny), he presided till his holy death (A.D. 672).  He worked many miracles, raising the dead to life, and in many parts of Ireland is invoked effectually on the part of paralytics and of those possessed by evil spirits.
