  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN DECEMBER Saints celebrated on the 4th of December WELCOME! SAINT BERNARD, BISHOP OF PARMA Saint Bernard  (Bernardus), Bishop of Parma, Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church and seventh general of the Order of Vallumbrosa [Vallombrosa], was born in Florence of the noble family of the Uberti.  He entered the Order of the Vallombrosians at an early age and, because of his virtues, was elected abbot and soon afterwards general of the Order. Pope Urban II held him in extremely high esteem, making him cardinal, a dignity, however, which Bernard had tried in every way to avoid. When he had managed to bring the city of Parma back to obedience to the Pope, the residents were so grateful that they asked him to be their bishop.  He foretold the end of his life and duly died in 1133 in the arms of his brethren who sung psalms throughout. SAINT ERLOMAN, RELIGIOUS Because of religious or family hatred, King Monachus imprisoned Erloman (Erlomannus), an Englishman, as a youth. In tears, his mother had begged Abbot Fechin (Fechinus) to use his influence, and the holy man obtained freedom for her son. The grateful and delighted mother then left the son with Abbot Fechin for training, and under his leadership Erloman became a model religious. He then taught both canon and civil law at Toulouse and Cahors, came into close relations with Charles II of Naples, and on his recommendation was made Bishop of Frejus in 1300.  In 1309 he was appointed chancellor of Charles II, and in 1310 was transferred to the See of Avignon. SAINT MARUTHAS, BISHOP AND CONFESSOR Saint Maruthas was an illustrious father of the Syriac church about the end of the fourth century; and was bishop of Tagrit, in Mesopotamia, at that time subject to the Oriental empire, though near the borders of Persia.  He compiled the Acts of the martyrs who suffered in that kingdom, during the forty years of Sapor’s persecution, from 340 to 380, part of which valuable collection has been recovered and published by Stephen Assemani, in 1748.  HE WROTE SEVERAL HYMNS IN PRAISE OF THE MARTYRS St Maruthas wrote several hymns in praise of the martyrs, which together with others of St Ephrem, are inserted in the Chaldaic divine office, and are sung by the  Maronites , Jacobites, and Nestorians, who use that tongue in the church office.  St Maruthas gathered the relics of many Persian martyrs, and distributed them over the Roman em...

After holding public office for a time, he withdrew to the monastery of Sabas near Jerusalem. He wrote ‘The Fount of Wisdom’, in which he presented a comprehensive teaching on Christian doctrine, which had great influence on later theology. He died about 750.
