HEDDO, BISHOP OF STRASBOURG Heddo, remembered on March 8 and July 3, variously listed as Hetto, Etto, Heddon, Eddon, Haddon, Edda, Addam, Athik, Ethics, Euto, Haiko, Oddo, Otto, Speddo etc., was bishop of Strasbourg. A grandson of Ethiko, who was the father of Saint Odilia , Heddo descended from a renowned Alsatian ducal family.  Heddo started his holy career as abbot of the Gregorienthal monastery, Upper Rhine Department. After some time, Abbot Pirmin (Pirminus), whom the Alemannic Duke Theobald had expelled from the Neichenau monastery (Augia dives) in 727, appointed Heddo abbot of this institute. As such he was very successful; he made his monastery the motherhouse of several others, among them Marbach (Marbacum) in Alsace, Pfäffers in Switzerland and Niederaltaich in Bavaria. (1693) Saint Hunfrid (Hunfridus, Hunfredus, Huntfridus, Huntfredus, Humfridus, Humifridus Honfridus) was the successor of Saint Folcuinus and according to Zedler* (XLII. 1065) the 17th bishop of Terouenne (Thérouanne) (Tarvenna). He came to Flanders (Morinum, Belgica secunda)  as a bishop in A.D. 356 - i.e. at a time that was assessed by the second council of Toul as follows:  "all divine and human laws are despised, all monastic and ecclesiastical discipline is in confusion, and curses and lies, adultery and murder have gotten the upper hand." Migne * and others count him among the saints. Kelly *, who mentions him twice (p. 25), he calls him Mac Colaim Chirr, Bishop of Darinis (Great Island), next to Wexford. His public veneration is undeniable. His name is also variously given as Nemhan or Noemhan, which means something like Celestine or Sanctorius . (Kelly, p. 90).   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 8th of March CELESTINE II., POPE  ⬅️ Saintly Popes - Index Guido del Castello was a native of Roman Tuscany, date of birth unknown; he died March 8, 1144. He was a disciple of Abelard, and added to great learning the reputation of a grave and upright priest. He was made cardinal in 1128, and in 1140 legate to France where he incurred the displeasure of St Bernard for the protection he accorded Arnold of Brescia. He succeeded Innocent II, September 25, 1143, and at once lifted from France the interdict that his predecessor had inflicted because of the act of Louis VII in opposing his own candidate to the rightfully elected Bishop of Bourges.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 8th of March WELCOME! SAINT JOHN OF GOD, RELIGIOUS Saint John was born in Portugal in 1495. He spent an adventurous youth as a soldier. A sermon of Saint John of Avila turned his mind to the sufferings of the poor and sick, and he devoted the rest of his life to their care. He established hospitals for the outcasts of society. Gradually others joined him in his work, and his followers established the Order of Hospitallers of Saint John of God . He died in 1550. PRAYER: Father, you who gave John of God love and compassion for others, grant that by doing good for others we may be counted among the saints in your kingdom. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
