ST FRIARDUS, CONFESSOR - 1 AUGUST

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN AUGUST Saints celebrated on the 1st of August WELCOME! SAINT FRIARDUS, CONFESSOR (SS. Friardus and Secundellus, Confessors [ August 1 )].  Saint Friardus - called Friarius by  Butler * - was distinguished from childhood by his fear of God; he spent most of his time in vigil and prayer, yet never failed to earn his livelihood through manual labour. After falling from a tall tree and remaining uninjured, he resolved to serve God ceaselessly in solitude. Together with Abbot Sabaudus and the deacon Secundellus , he settled on the island of Vindunita, in the territory of Nantes, living there in a simple cell. When the wind once tore a branch from a tree he had planted, Friardus fashioned a staff from it; long afterwards, he planted it in the ground and watered it diligently, and it grew into a large tree. Before his death, he respectfully invited  Bishop Felix to visit him. He passed into eternal life during the second half of the sixth century...

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN AUGUST Saints celebrated on the 1st of August WELCOME! SAINT MARY OF VERONA, VIRGIN 📷 FiniaM Saint Mary, Virgin (August 1) is venerated in Verona under the title "the Comforter." In the church bearing her name, where her relics repose, her image appears on the high altar alongside that of the Mother of God, the true "Comforter of the Afflicted." In her left hand, she holds a pair of scales: one pan contains images representing "duorum corporum" (two bodies), while the other holds a ring; in her right hand, she holds a lily. The latter signifies her virginal dignity, while the former alludes to the translation of the holy martyrs  Firmus and Rusticus (from Capra in Istria) - an event brought about, according to legend, through her intervention. For this purpose, she offered a large quantity of gold - consisting mostly of rings and jewellery - with which she intended to weigh the holy bodies against the metal. Yet, miraculou...

STEPHEN IV., POPE - 1 AUGUST

Stephen IV, Pope, was born about 720; died August 1, 772. Paul I was not dead when trouble began about the election of his successor. Toto of Nepi with a body of Tuscans burst into Rome, and, despite the opposition of the primicerius Christopher, forcibly intruded his brother Constantine, a layman, into the chair of Peter (June, 767).  In the spring of 768, however, Christopher and his son Sergius contrived to escape from the city, and with the aid of the Lombards deposed the usurper. They were also able to overthrow the monk Philip, whom some of their Lombard allies had clandestinely elected pope.  By their efforts Stephen, a Sicilian, the son of Olivus, was at length canonically elected and consecrated (August 7, 768). He had been a Benedictine monk, and had been ordained priest by Pope Zachary. After his consecration the...
