BLESSED EDMUND CATHERICK, PRIEST AND MARTYR He was descended from the Cathericks of Carlton, an ancient family in the north riding of Yorkshire, not far from Richmond. He performed his studies in the English college of Douay, and being there made priest, was sent upon the English mission about the year 1635, being then 30 years old. He stands with a fair character in the college diary, and is particularly commended for his extraordinary meekness, and for his zeal and labours in the mission: R. D. Challoner, New Edition, Thomas Jones, London, Paternoster Row, 1842 John Lockwood, alias Lassels, was eldest son of Christopher Lockwood, esq. of Soresby in the county of York, by N. Lassels his wife, daughter of Sir Robert Lassels of Brackenbrough, in the same county. He was born in 1555, according to the Douay diary, which gives him no more than 87 years of age, when he suffered; (though I have before me some relations, which affirm that he was at that time 96 years old). He had exercised his priestly functions, according to the same diary, for the space of 44 years before his martyrdom: so it is likely he did not retire out of England till late.   WELCOME! BLESSED FRANCIS DICCONSON, PRIEST AND MARTYR Francis Diconson [Dicconson], a Yorkshireman, suffered with Miles Gerard , who was born in Lancashire, of a gentleman's family. These two were both priests of Douay college, during its residence at Rheims, and were sent together upon the English mission, from Rheims, on the 31st of August, 1589; though Mr Gerard had been ordained priest in 1583. The ship in which they went for England was overtaken by a violent storm, by which they were cast away upon the coast of Kent.  But it was not God's will that they should perish by this less glorious death, his divine providence having reserved for them the crown of martyrdom. They escaped therefore to the shore, where they met with a more violent storm, for being immediately apprehended, (upon suspicion, or the information of some of the ship's crew,) and cast into prison, they were arraigned, tried, and condemned for coming into England, being priests; and, upon this account,...

BLESSED MILES GERARD, PRIEST AND MARTYR [Blessed Miles Gerard], martyr; born c. 1550 at Wigan; executed at Rochester 13 (30?) April, 1590. Sprung perhaps from the Gerards of Ince, he was, about 1576, tutor to the children of Squire Edward Tyldesley, at Morleys, Lancashire.  Thence in 1579 he went to the seminaries of Douai and Reims, where he was ordained April 7, 1583, and then stayed on as professor until August 31, 1589 (O.S.), when he started for England with five companions.  At Dunkirk the sailors refused to take more than two passengers; so the missioners tossed for precedence, and Gerard and Francis Dicconson , the eldest (it seems) and youngest of the party, won.  Though bound for London, they were driven out of their course into Dover harbour, where they were examined and arrested on suspicion (November 24, N.S.). BLESSED EDMUND CATHERICK, PRIEST AND MARTYR This holy priest  and martyr was born probably in Lancashire about 1605 and executed at York, April 13, 1642. He was descended from the old family of Catherick of Carlton and Stanwick, in the North Riding of Yorkshire, known for its loyalty to the Faith. Educated at Douai College, he was ordained in the same institution, and about 1635 went out to the English mission where he began his seven years' ministry which closed with his death. During this time he was known under the alias Huddleston , which was probably his mother's maiden name. Apprehended in the North Riding, near Watlas, Catherick was brought by pursuivants before Justice Dodsworth, a connection by marriage - possibly an uncle.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN APRIL Saints celebrated on the 13th of April WELCOME! BLESSED JOHN LOCKWOOD, PRIEST AND MARTYR  [Blessed] John Lockwood, priest and martyr, was born about 1555. He was the eldest son of Christopher Lockwood, of Sowerby, Yorkshire, by Clare, eldest daughter of Christopher Lascelles, of Sowerby and Brackenborough Castle, Yorkshire. With the second son, Francis, he arrived at Reims on November 4, 1579, and was at once sent to Douai to study philosophy.  Francis was ordained in 1587, but John entered the English College, Rome, on October 4, 1595, was ordained priest on January 26, 1597, and sent on the mission, April 20, 1598. After suffering imprisonment he was banished in 1610, but returned, and was again taken and condemned to death, but reprieved.  He was finally captured at Wood End, Gatenby, the residence of Bridget Gatenby, and executed at York, April 13, 1642. Levigild, or Leovigild, the Goth (his name in original Gothic manuscripts is constantly written Liuvigild) king of Spain, had two sons by his first wife Theodosia, namely, Hermenegild and Recared.  These he educated in the Arian heresy, which he himself professed, but married Hermenegild, the eldest, to Ingondes, a zealous Catholic, and daughter to Sigebert, king of Austrasia, in France.  The grandees had hitherto disposed of their crown by election, but Levigild, to secure it to his posterity, associated his two sons with him in his sovereignty, and allotted to each a portion of his dominions to inure them to government, and Seville fell to the lot of the elder.  INGONDES HAD MUCH TO SUFFER Ingondes had much to suffer from Gosvint, a bigoted Arian, whom Levigild had married after the death of Theodosia; but, in spite of all her cruel treatment...
