  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JANUARY Saints celebrated on the 6th of January WELCOME! SAINT GERTRUDE OF DELFT, VIRGIN One of the saints remembered by the Church this weekend is Saint Gertrude of Delft. She was born in Voorburcht, now in Holland, to peasant parents around the beginning of the 14th century. Saint Gertrude went into domestic service at Delft. After living a pious life for many years, Saint Gertrude was engaged to be married. But her fiancé broke with her and married another woman. Broken-hearted at first, Saint Gertrude gradually overcame her anguish and chose a new direction in life. She joined the Beguinage in Delft.  The Beguines were sisterhoods of celibate women who lived in common households, prayed together, and dedicated themselves to works of mercy. Beguines could hold property and leave the community to marry. SAINT ERMINOLD, ABBOT In A.D. 1035, Saint Erminold was born in Swabia to godly parents who, for his education, placed him under the monastic care of  Hirschau . This Württemberg monastery, not far from Calw, founded in A.D. 830, belonged to the Order of Saint Benedict. Its most famous abbot was William (Wilhelm), who reigned from 1069-1091. It was to this godly abbot that Erminold was entrusted to trained.  After taking his vows, Erminold showed himself an excellent religious, with a real knack for initiating others into the spirit of the Order, while at the same time being a zealous and capable spiritual father. That is why Emperor Henry (Heinrich V) had him in mind in 1110 when the dignity of abbot was to be awarded at Lorsch (Lauresheim) in the Upper Rheingau. (1693) Saint Gertrude van Oosten, Virgin, died in the year 1358 at the Beguine Convent [Bagijnhof] at Delft (Delphi) in Holland with a reputation of holiness.  She descended from poor parents in the village of Voorburg between Hague and Delft. She had to go out into the world at an early age in order to eke out a living as a maid, but she had always felt an urge for an inward, secluded life. This was also evident by the fact that she did not spend her free hours on entertainment like others, but on service dedicated to the sick. Set back by her fiancé, she asked to be admitted to the Beguine Convent in Delft, and was taken in. The biography goes on to say that she earned her living by begging; one may assume, however, that this only happened when the virgins' earnings from needlew...

Saint Nilammon, who being chosen bishop of Geres, and finding the patriarch Theophilus deaf to his tears and excuses, prayed that God would rather take him out of the world than permit him to be consecrated bishop of the place, for which he was intended. His prayer was heard, for he died before he had finished it. His name occurs in the modern Roman Martyrology on this day. A LIKE EXAMPLE A like example is recorded in the life of brother Columban, published in Italian and French, in 1755. The life of this holy man from his childhood at Abbeville, the place of his birth, and afterwards at Marseilles, was a model of innocence, alms-deeds, and devotion. SAINT MELANIUS OF RENNES, BISHOP AND CONFESSOR Saint Melanius [Melaine] was a native of Placs or Plets, in the diocese of Vannes in Brittany, and had served God with great fervour in a monastery for some years, when, upon the death of St Amandus, bishop of Rennes, he was compelled by the clergy and people to fill that see, though his humility made great opposition.  HIS VIRTUE WAS GREATLY ENHANCED BY A SINCERE HUMILITY His virtue was chiefly enhanced by a sincere humility, and a spirit of continual prayer. The author of his life tells us, that he raised one that was dead to life, and performed many other miracles. King Clovis, after his conversion, held him in great veneration. SAINT ANDRE BESSETTE, RELIGIOUS On October 17, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI presided at a Mass in St Peter’s Square for the Canonisation of six new saints of the Church. One of these new saints is Saint Andre Bessette, who was born in 1845 in Saint-Gregoire d’Iberville, near Montreal, Canada. He was the eighth of twelve children. His father moved the family to Farnhan in 1849 in the hope of improving the family’s financial situation while working as a carpenter and lumberjack. "I PRAYED TO HER" Sadly, when Andre was nine years old his father was killed by a falling tree. His mother died three years later of tuberculosis, leaving ten children to be cared for. St Andre later said that he “seldom prayed for my mother, but I often prayed to her”.
