SAINT LEODEGAR, ABBOT Saint Leodegar (Leodegarius), St-Léger in French,  a pious priest at the monastery in Perte, Champagne, was appointed by a bishop of Chalons sur Marne (Catalaunum) as rector of the congregation living there. Papebroch * emphasises that the bishop who entrusted Leodegar with this office was not Saint Memmius, but rather Saint Alpinus. In his new role, Saint Leodegar was very concerned for his monastery and sought to improve it in every way. He even dug a well which was known as "Saint Leodegar's Fountain" for centuries to come.   He tamed his body through constant prayer, watching and fasting, so that God glorified him by miracles already during his lifetime. For instance, a man who was contracted in every limb made a full recovery by Leodegar's prayers, and on another occasion a lunatic came back to his senses. At length, Leodegar died at a ripe old age, rich in v...

SAINT EGBERT, CONFESSOR - 24 APRIL

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN APRIL Saints celebrated on the 24th of April SAINT EGBERT, CONFESSOR Saint Egbert was a Northumbrian monk, born of noble parentage c.639; he died 729.  In his youth he went for the sake of study to Ireland, to a monastery, says the Venerable Bede, “called Rathmelsigi”, identified by some with Mellifont in what is now County Louth. There, when in danger of death from pestilence, he prayed for time to do penance, vowing amongst other things to live always in exile from his own country. In consequence he never returned to England, though he lived to the age of ninety, and always fasted rigorously.  Having become a priest, he was filled with zeal for the conversion of the still pagan German tribes related to the Angles, and would himself have become their apostle, if God had not shown him that his real calling was to other work. It was he, however, who dispatched to Friesland Saint Wigbert, Saint Willibrord, and other saintly missionaries.  Sai...

THE CONVERSION OF ST AUGUSTINE - 24 APRIL

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN APRIL Saints celebrated on the 24th of April THE CONVERSION OF ST AUGUSTINE  ⬅️ More information about Saint Augustine I was suddenly asking myself these questions, weeping all the while with the most bitter sorrow in my heart, when all at once I heard a sing-song voice of a child in a nearby house. Whether it as the voice of a boy or a girl I cannot say, but again and again it repeated the refrain “Take and read, take and read” (Tolle lege, Tolle lege). TOLLE, LEGE, TOLLE LEGE At this I looked up, thinking hard whether there was any kind of game in which children used to chant words like these, but I could not remember ever hearing them before. I stemmed the flood of tears and stood up, telling myself that this could only be a divine command to open my book of scripture and read the first passage on which my eyes should fall. So I hurried back to the place where Alypius was sitting, for when I stood up to move away I had put down the book containing...
