EDWARD ARDEN, MARTYR - 30 DECEMBER

EDWARD ARDEN, MARTYR Edward Arden was an English Catholic, executed during the reign of Queen Elizabeth, born c. 1542. He was the head of a family which had been prominent in Warwickshire for six centuries, having succeeded to the estates on the death of his grandfather, Thomas Arden, in 1563. In 1575 he was high sheriff of the county. His father, William Arden, was a second cousin of Mary Arden of Wilmcote, the mother of Shakespeare.  In 1583, Arden was indicted in Warwick for plotting against the life of the Queen, as were also his wife, his son-in-law, John Somerville, and Father Hugh Hall, a chaplain whom he maintained in the disguise of a gardener at his home, Park Hall. Somerville, who was said to be weak-minded, was incensed over the wrongs of Mary, Queen of Scots, and openly uttered threats against Elizabeth.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN DECEMBER Saints celebrated on the 30th of December WELCOME! SAINT ROGER, BISHOP OF CANNA This holy bishop was born in Canna [Cannae], now called Canna distrutta . Well-mannered and educated, he first became a cleric at the local cathedral and finally a bishop. As such, this zealous, humble man was a veritable blessing to his flock. His funeral took place in his episcopal city. But when the Saracens made the area increasingly unsafe, the relics were transferred to Barletta ( Barolum ) near Trani, (in 1275) where they rest in St Stephen's Church. BLESSED EUGENIA RAVASCO, VIRGIN AND FOUNDRESS  The third of six children, Eugenia Ravasco was born on January 4, 1845 in Milan, Italy. When she was three years old her mother died and her father moved to Genoa where his two brothers lived, taking with him his eldest son, Ambrose, and the youngest daughter, Elisa. Eugenia remained in Milan with her Aunt Marietta Anselmi, who became a second mother to her and carefully educated her in the faith. In 1852, the family was reunited in Genoa and following her father's death in March 1855, Eugenia went to live for some time with her uncle Luigi Ravasco and her aunt Elisa and their 10 children. Luigi Ravasco was careful to give his nephews and nieces a Christian upbringing. BLESSED GIOVANNI MARIA BOCCARDO, PRIEST AND FOUNDER Blessed Giovanni Maria Boccardo was born in Testona di Moncalieri (near Turin), Italy, November 20, 1848. He studied at the diocesan seminary of Turin and was ordained in 1871. For the next eleven years he provided spiritual direction to seminarians in Chieri and Turin. His first parochial appointment was to Pancalieri in 1882, and he remained there until his death.  Although he enjoyed the seminary, he viewed his parochial assignment as an opportunity for evangelization. When, in 1884, cholera struck the village, he personally tended the sick. Afterwards he established the Hospice of Charity to care for those left abandoned or homeless by the epidemic, including orphans and the poor elderly. SAINT SABINUS AND COMPANIONS, MARTYRS - 30 DECEMBER

SAINT SABINUS AND COMPANIONS, MARTYRS In 303, during the reign of Diocletian, the president Venustianus had the bishop of Assisi, called Sabinus, imprisoned for being a Christian, along with his two deacons, named Marcellus and Exuperantius (Exsuperantius), and other clergymen. The public hearing was held the very next day. The bishop had both his hands cut off after allegedly dishonouring an idol. The two deacons, Marcellus and Exuperantius, were stretched on the rack, struck with rods and lacerated with iron claws. Both gave up the ghost under these torments, invoking the name of Christ, their bodies were thrown into the water, but pulled out again and buried. JOHN EVANGELIST STADLER, HAGIOGRAPHER John (Johann) Evangelist Stadler was a Bavarian hagiographer, born at Parkstetten, in the Diocese of Ratisbon [Regensburg], December 24, 1804; he died at Augsburg, December 30, 1868.  After completing the humanities in the gymnasium of Straubing in 1821, he entered the University of Landshut, where, in addition to the philosophical and theological studies prescribed for candidates to the priesthood, he devoted much of his time to the study of oriental and modern languages.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN DECEMBER Saints celebrated on the 30th of December INNOCENT IX., POPE  ⬅️ Saintly Popes - Index Giovanni Antonio Facchinetti was born at Bologna, July 22, 1519; elected, October 29, 1591; he died at Rome, December 30, 1591.  After successful studies in jurisprudence in his native city he was graduated as doctor of law in 1544, and proceeded to Rome, where Cardinal Nicolò Ardinghelli chose him as his secretary. Later he entered the service of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, who appointed him his ecclesiastical representative at the head of the Archdiocese of Avignon and subsequently called him to the management of his affairs at Parma.  In 1560 he was named Bishop of Nicastro in Calabria, and in 1562 was present at the Council of Trent.
