ARMAND DE LA RICHARDIE, MISSIONARY - 17 MARCH

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 17th of March WELCOME! ARMAND DE LA RICHARDIE, MISSIONARY Armand de la Richardie was born at Perigueux, June 7, 1686. He entered the Society of Jesus at Bordeaux on October 4, 1703, and in 1725 was sent to the Canada mission. He spent the two following years helping Father Pierre Daniel Richer at Lorette, and studying the Huron language.  In 1728 he went to Detroit to re-establish the long-interrupted mission to the dispersed Petun-Hurons in the West. Not a solitary professing Christian did he find, but among the aged not a few had been baptised. The local church was scarcely spacious enough to contain the fervent congregation of practising Hurons. During the night, 24/25 March, 1746, the father was stricken with paralysis, and on July 29 he was placed in an open canoe and thus conveyed to Quebec. In 1747 the Hurons insisted on his returning to restore tranquillity to their nation. The father had almost completely recovered from

PAULA MALATESTA, WIDOW - 17 MARCH

WELCOME! PAULA MALATESTA, WIDOW Paula Malatesta, widow of Francis Gonzaga, first Marquis of Mantua, took the veil at the monastery of Corporis Christi in Mantua, which she had founded.  Even while her husband was still alive, she visited the hospitals three times a week, attended to the sick, bandaged their wounds and gave them spiritual and bodily alms. At public processions she showed such great devotion that all those who attended were edified; often she took part with no shoes on, just on her bare feet.  As a widow, having become a nun, she  left a reputation for a holy life. Paula died in 1449, having decreed that her body should be buried in front of the church door, so that those entering could walk over it, and that the priests might be reminded to commemorate her soul at the altar. The Bollandists * mention this holy lady among the Praetermissi.   (II. 507 and Seraph. Mart.) (Information from  Stadler 's Complete Encyclopedia of Saints,  Volume  4, Augsburg, 1875) *A hag

JULIA OF THEBAIS, VIRGIN - 17 MARCH

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 17th of March JULIA OF THEBAIS, VIRGIN Julia was a virgin at a monastery of Thebais and teacher of Saint Eupraxia , in whose life she is frequently mentioned by the Bollandists * (March 13 - II. 264-274) . She read Psalms and prayed with her, talked to her about spiritual things, praised her fasting and recommended further progress. When Saint Eupraxia died, Julia was heartbroken, weeping for three entire days. On the fourth day, however, Julia became happy once more, went to the abbess and asked her for her prayers, because God had called her to Himself at the intercession of Eupraxia. Then she kissed all the sisters. On the fifth day she died and was laid in the same tomb as Saint Eupraxia.  In some Carmelite calendars, an Antonia is mentioned as the teacher of Saint Eupraxia; but presumably this was the abbess, who in Greek has the name Theodula.
