CLEMENT XIV., POPE - 22 SEPTEMBER

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN SEPTEMBER Saints celebrated on the 22nd of September WELCOME! CLEMENT XIV., POPE ⬅️ Saintly Popes - Index Lorenzo Giovanni Vincenzo Antonio Ganganelli was born at Sant' Arcangelo, near Rimini, October 31, 1705; died at Rome, September 22, 1774. At the death of Clement XIII the Church was in dire distress. Gallicanism and Jansenism, Febronianism and Rationalism were up in rebellion against the authority of the Roman pontiff; the rulers of France, Spain, Naples, Portugal, Parma were on the side of the sectarians who flattered their dynastic prejudices and, at least in appearance, worked for the strengthening of the temporal power against the spiritual.  The new pope would have to face a coalition of moral and political forces which Clement XIII had indeed manfully resisted, but failed to put down, or even materially to check. The great question between Rome and the Bourbon princes was the suppression of the Society of Jesus. In France, Spain, and Portu...

His parents, Alphonsus Thomas Garcias and Lucy Martinez, were originally of Villanova. Their fortune was not affluent; but it contented all their wishes, and with their prudent frugality enabled them liberally to assist the poor. The first words which his parents had taught him to pronounce were the names of Jesus and Mary; and during his whole life he had the most tender devotion to the mother of God.  At the age of fifteen he was sent to the university of Alcala, which had been lately founded by Cardinal Ximenes, who gave him a place in St Ildefonso’s college.  After eleven years spent at Alcala he was made professor of philosophy in that city, being then twenty-six years old. After he had taught two years at Alcala, he taught moral philosophy two years at Salamanca: during which time he consi...

ST SALABERGA, WIDOW AND ABBESS - 22 SEPTEMBER

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN SEPTEMBER Saints celebrated on the 22nd of September WELCOME! SAINT SALABERGA, WIDOW AND ABBESS   Salaberga's parents, Gundoinus and Saretrudis (otherwise also called Bertoldus and Bertildis), were very wealthy. She had two brothers, Lendulnus Bodo, later Bishop of Toul, and Fulcnisus Bodo. Her birthplace was Orney, diocese of Langres.  As a virgin she went blind, but around the year 617 the holy Abbot  Eustasius of Luxeuil cured her by means of prayer and consecrated oil, which he applied to  her sick eyes. Thereupon she had her eyesight restored. The miracle probably happened on the Meuse estate (Mosa), where the parents stayed.  Soon after, her parents gave her for marriage to a nobleman named Richrammus. She agreed, although she would have preferred to take the veil. Her husband died just two months after the wedding. But she had to get married a second time. So her wish to go to the monastery in Remiremont remained unfulfill...
