SAINT PATTO, BISHOP OF VERDEN - 30 MARCH

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 30th of March WELCOME! SAINT PATTO, BISHOP OF VERDEN Saint Patto (Pacificus), first bishop of Verden in Hanover, a Scot, was elevated to the episcopal see in A.D. 785, but soon after a pagan rebellion led to his expulsion. He is called Abbot of Amorbach in the Verden Chronicle . (cf. Rettberg, K.-G. Deutschl. II. 462.) His death, too, seems to have occurred at the latter place, since the chronicle reports that his mortal remains were transferred to Verden at the same time as those of Haruch. He passed away on March 30, 788. (Rettberg, in his work, explains that the name Patto is derived from Pazzo , which is the Saxon form of Pacificus. ) Saint Patto is also commemorated on March 3 (III. 844). SAINT PASTOR, BISHOP OF ORLEANS A page of a German Martyrology from 1753 Although the Roman Martyrology * lists Saint Pastor, feast day March 30, as a bishop of Orleans, the Bollandists * consider this doubtful. Baronius *, quoting Ado and others, suggest that he may rather have been bishop at Spalatro in Dalmatia and to have died in exile in Orleans (III. 830). SERVANT OF GOD THEA BOWMAN, VIRGIN Sister Thea Bowman FSPA, a convert, was born Bertha Bowman in 1937 in Yazoo City, Mississippi, USA. Her parents, Dr Theon Bowman and his wife Mary Esther Bowman, a doctor and a teacher, were Methodists. They later to moved Canton, Mississippi, where Bertha encountered the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration at Holy Child Jesus School. Aged nine, Bertha chose to become Catholic; her parents gave their consent. When she was 15, she left home for La Crosse, Wisconsin, to attend the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration’s high school, later joining the community and taking the name Sister Mary Thea. Sister Thea is best remembered for her teaching; she helped children to grow in awareness of their gifts, their cultural heritage and their heritage as children of God. (1693) A number of saints' catalogues list Saints Victor, Marcellinus, Satullus, Crusus, Agathonia, Saturnin, Philippolus, Dativus, and also the virgins Aquilina and Eulalia on this day. Usuardus * and Wandelbert *, in accordance with the Martyrology of Saint Jerome *, specify that they suffered in Thessalonica. All of them attained the imperishable crown of martyrdom there - except Saint Eulalia , who was martyred at Asta (Asta Regia) in Spain. No further details are provided. BENEDICT VI., POPE ⬅️ Saintly Popes - Index Benedict, Cardinal-Deacon of St Theodore, a Roman and the son of Hildebrand, was elected as the successor of John XIII, who died September 6, 972; but the necessity of waiting for the ratification of the Emperor Otho delayed his consecration till January 18, 973. [December 20, 972.] Nothing is known of his deeds, except that he confirmed the privileges of some churches and monasteries. The most striking event of his pontificate is the tragic close. He was seized and thrown into the Castle of Sant' Angelo by a faction of the nobility headed by Crescentius and the Deacon Boniface VII. There, after a confinement of less than two months, he was strangled by their orders, to prevent his release by Sicco, an imperial envoy, sent to Rome by Otho II. This happened in August 974. SAINT ZOSIMUS, BISHOP OF SYRACUSE Saint Zosimus (Zosymus), bishop of Syracuse was born there of wealthy and virtuous parents, and from his seventh year was brought up at the convent of St Lucy. But he had so little inclination for monastic life that he returned to his parents' house - against the wishes of his parents and Abbot Faustus. HE DECIDED TO BRING THIS SACRIFICE OF OBEDIENCE But, despite this, his parents insisted that he take up the monastic profession and forcibly brought him back, he decided to bring this sacrifice of obedience to God, and gradually became (according to legend, St Lucy appeared to him and beat him because he was not guarding her resting place carefully enough) such a good monk that after the death of Faustus he was elected abbot. ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 30th of March WELCOME! BLESSED DODO Dodo, a devout young dutchman, frequented the churches, fasted, assisted the poor, and obeyed his parents. Following his marriage, he, his wife, and his widowed mother all decided to enter religious life. Dodo received his abbot’s permission to live as a hermit. HE HEARD A VOICE FROM THE CROSS He ultimately journeyed to Asch, Netherlands, finding there an abandoned sanctuary with two images, a crucifix and a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary. While praying before the crucifix, Dodo heard a voice from the cross telling him that he was to settle in Asch. There he spent the rest of his life, rising daily at midnight for the office of matins and continuing his prayers until the morning Mass. In adoration he offered to God five hundred genuflections every day. Dodo’s prayers wrought miraculous cures.
