ST GALLA OF THE DURANCE, WIDOW - 5 OCTOBER

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN OCTOBER Saints celebrated on the 5th of October WELCOME! SAINT GALLA OF THE DURANCE, WIDOW Saint Galla, Widow (October 5).  This holy widow lived as a hermit, practicing strict penance, in a grotto by the Durance - a river in France, likely not far from Avignon - around the middle of the sixth century. Like another figure mentioned later ( Saint Galla, Wife of Eucherius ), she too had a daughter named Consortia; for this reason,  Baronius * identified the two as the same person. (Feb. I, 939; Oct. III, 147.) In the Ethiopian calendar *, the sons are called Horus and Agatho, and the mother is named Susanna. Nothing else is known about them.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN OCTOBER Saints celebrated on the 5th of October BLESSED WILLIAM HARTLEY, PRIEST AND MARTYR   ⬅️ Martyrs of England and Wales A Martyr; he was born at Wyn, in Derbyshire, England, of a yeoman family about 1557; died October 5, 1588.  [Raised a Protestant,] he matriculated at St John's, Oxford, where he became a chaplain. Being ejected by the vice-chancellor, Tobie Mathew, in 1579, he went to Reims in August, was ordained at Chalons, and returned to England in June, 1580.  He was of great service to Fathers Persons and Campion in printing and distributing their books, but was eventually arrested, August 13,1581, and sent to Marshalsea Prison, London.  Here he was detected saying Mass in a cell before Lord Vaux, and for this he was laid in irons (December 5, 1583). BLESSED FRANCIS XAVIER SEELOS  Born at Füssen, Bavaria, January 11, 1819; died at New Orleans, Louisiana, October 4, 1867.  When a child, asked by his mother what he intended to be, he pointed to the picture of his patron, St Francis Xavier, and said: "I’m going to be another Saint Francis."  He pursued his studies in Augsburg and Munich, and entered the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, offering himself for the American Mission; he arrived in America on April 17, 1843.  That following year, May 16, 1844, he made his religious profession at the Redemptorist novitiate, Baltimore, and seven months later he was ordained by Archbishop Eccleston of Baltimore.  He was assigned to St James, Baltimore. Bartholomew Longo Bartolo Longo was born into a wealthy family on February 10, 1841 in the small town of Latiano, near Brindisi, in southern Italy. His parents were devout Roman Catholics. He went to the University of Naples to study law. There, he came under the influence of some students who dabbled in witchcraft and consulted Neapolitan mediums. This led him into a Satanist cult.  life then became one of "depression, nervousness, and confusion". Bothered by paranoia and anxiety, Saint Bartolo turned to a hometown friend, Vincenzo Pepe, for guidance.
