ST HYPATIUS, BISHOP OF ANCYRA - 31 MARCH

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 31st of March WELCOME! SAINT HYPATIUS, BISHOP OF ANCYRA Saint Hypatius (March 31), was a bishop who on this day is listed in a Coptic calendar . The  Bollandists * ( III. 899 ) mention him, however, they are unable to provide more details about this holy prelate. It should also be noted that in the illustrations of the Greek-Russian calendar found in the introduction to Volume 1, Saint Hypatius is depicted as a bishop carrying an image of the Virgin Mary on March 31. The  Bollandists * ( May I. XXI ) conclude from this that he distinguished himself in the Iconoclasm as a defender of the pure doctrine; but on the other hand this type of depiction could also simply express the saint's general veneration of the Blessed Virgin. The Greek Directory ( Typikon ) calls him Bishop of Ancyra . Thus, it seems that he had no connection with Saint Hypatius , Bishop of Gangra (November 14), who lived in the 4th century, altho...

BL. THURSTAN HUNT AND BL. ROBERT MIDDLETON, PRIESTS AND MARTYRS - 31 MARCH

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 31st of March WELCOME! BLESSED THURSTAN HUNT AND BLESSED ROBERT MIDDLETON, PRIESTS AND MARTYRS Mr Thurstan Hunt [Thurston Hunt] was a gentleman by birth, born at Carleton-Hall, near Leeds, in Yorkshire, and brought up in Douay College during its residence at Rheims, where he was ordained priest by the cardinal de Guise, April 20, 1584; and sent from Rheims upon the English mission, in 1585.  His labours seem to have been chiefly in Lancashire; where, attempting, with some others, to rescue a priest, whom the officers were carrying to prison, he himself was apprehended, and being found to be a priest, was sent up to London, together with Mr Robert Middleton, (a gentleman of the same character, who had fallen into their hands about the same time,) who was a native of York, and a priest of the college of Seville, in Spain.  They were quickly sent back to be tried and executed in Lancashire, where they had chiefly best...

ST ACACIUS, BISHOP OF ANTIOCH, CONFESSOR - 31 MARCH

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 31st of March WELCOME! SAINT ACACIUS, BISHOP OF ANTIOCH, CONFESSOR   Saint Acacius (Achates) was bishop of Antioch, probably the town of that name in Phrygia, where the Marcionites were numerous. He was surnamed Agath-angel, or Good-angel, and extremely respected by the people for his sanctity.  NOT ONE OF HIS FLOCK RENOUNCED CHRIST It was owing to his zeal that not one of his flock renounced Christ, by sacrificing to idols during the persecution of Decius, a weakness which several of the Marcionite heretics had betrayed. Our saint himself made a glorious confession of his faith; of which the following relation, transcribed from the public register, is a voucher:    A GLORIOUS CONFESSION OF HIS FAITH Martian, a man of consular dignity, arriving at Antioch, a small town of his government, ordered the bishop to be brought before him. His name was Acacius, and he was styled the buckler and refuge of that cou...

ST BENJAMIN, DEACON AND MARTYR - 31 MARCH

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 31st of March WELCOME! SAINT BENJAMIN, DEACON AND MARTYR  (A.D. 424.) Isdegerdes, son of Sapor III, put a stop to the cruel persecutions against the Christians in Persia, which had been begun by Sapor II, and the Church had enjoyed twelve years’ peace in that kingdom, when, in 420, it was disturbed by the indiscreet zeal of one Abdas, a Christian bishop, who burned down the Pyraeum, or temple of fire, the great divinity of the Persians.  BISHOP ABDAS WAS PUT TO DEATH King Isdegerdes threatened to demolish all the churches of the Christians, unless he would rebuild it. Abdas had done ill in destroying the temple, but did well in refusing to rebuild it; for nothing can make it lawful to contribute to any act of idolatry, or to the building a temple, as Theodoret observes. Isdegerdes therefore demolished all the Christian churches in Persia, put to death Abdas, and raised a general persecution against the Church, whic...

SAINT FEAST DAY 31 MARCH: ST BENJAMIN

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 31st of March WELCOME! SAINT BENJAMIN, DEACON AND MARTYR  King Isdegerdes demolished all the Christian churches in Persia and raised a general persecution against the Church. From 421 onwards, his son and successor, Varanes, carried on the persecution with greater inhumanity.  Among the martyrs for Christ was Saint Benjamin, a deacon. The tyrant caused him to be beaten and imprisoned. He had lain a year in the dungeon, when an ambassador from the emperor obtained his release on condition that he should never speak to any of the courtiers about religion.  HE SHOULD MISS NO OPPORTUNITY OF ANNOUNCING CHRIST Benjamin, who was a minister of the Gospel, declared that he should miss no opportunity of announcing Christ. The king, being informed that he still preached the Faith in his kingdom, ordered him to be apprehended, and ordered him to be subjected to most horrendous tortures. In torment he expired in the year 4...
