SAINT GREGORY, BISHOP OF LANGRES  Langres Cathedral   Saint Gregory , Bishop of Langres, commemorated on January 4 and May 13, became immensely popular as a senator of Autun through his strict justice. His wife Armentaria bore him two sons,  Saint Tetricus , later also Bishop of Langres, and Gregory, the grandfather of  Saint Gregory of Tours . After serving as a senator for 40 years, he renounced this office to dedicate himself physically to God alone, whom he carried in his heart. When his wife died, he was unexpectedly ordained a priest, and soon afterward, by the joint election of the clergy and people, was elevated to Bishop of Langres. As such, he worked through word and example, as well as through the apostolic wisdom with which he was endowed, at the Synods of Epaone (in 517) and Auvergne (in 535). SAINT LIBENTIUS, ARCHBISHOP OF HAMBURG-BREMEN Also known as Liavizo Lubentius, Libentio, Liavinzo, Liawizo, Luizo, Liebitzo, French: Liévizon , Saint Libentius, Archbishop of Bremen-Hamburg, was born in the mid-10th century in Italy. He became acquainted with Archbishop Adaldag , who had met up with Emperor Otto the Great discussing matters relating to the empire, and ended up accompanying him on his return journey to Hamburg.  Libentius was of great learning and excellent piety, which is why Adaldag accepted him among his clergy and appointed him as his successor, thereby favouring him over the accepted candidate for this position - his sister's son, the virtuous Magdeburg canon Otto.  After the archbishop's death on April 28 or 29, 988, Libentius was indeed elevated to the archiepiscopal see of Hamburg and confirmed by the emperor on November 8.  Pope John XV gave him the pallium ...

(1693) Venerable Maria was a biological sister of Pope Paul IV , Caraffa. Born in Naples, she tried from an early age to please God more and more each day. She avoided an honourable marriage in her twentieth year by gaining entry into the cloister of the Dominican nuns in Naples, from which, as she said, she would only be brought out as a corpse.  She began the novitiate and soon surpassed even the most pious of her sisters in virtue. When they wanted to make her superior, she was so shocked that in her great humility she kneeled down and begged her fellow sisters to give her some arduous, menial duties that others despised. (1693) Saint Pharaildis lived in the 8th century. She is one of the Patron Saints of Ghent. She was a sister of Saint Gudula , and was brought up by Saint Gertrude of Nivelles . After a devoted and most austere life she died at the age of ninety, about A.D. 745.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JANUARY Saints celebrated on the 4th of January SAINT CELSUS, BISHOP OF TRIER The name Celsus is Latin: celsus means the high , sublime . Saint Celsus, the fifth bishop of Trier [Treves], was of a noble family, and died about the year 142 or 150, having reigned, as some believe, fourteen years and converting many to Christianity. In 980, his mortal remains were rediscovered and solemnly raised. The memory of this event is celebrated on February 23.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JANUARY Saints celebrated on the 4th of January WILLIAM WALSH, BISHOP OF MEATH, MARTYR ⬅️ List: Irish Confessors and Martyrs [William Walsh] (Wilhelmus Willelmus) is also remembered on January 2. This zealous servant of God was a Cistercian and Bishop of Meath in Ireland, and was surnamed Valchaeus .  Devoted to the Catholic faith with utmost fervour, he defended it against the attacks of the innovators of that time with such success that, on the orders of Queen Elizabeth, they decided to have him imprisoned and murdered.  For thirteen years he had to languish in a narrow and dark prison, whereupon he was expelled from the country. He went to Spain and found a willing reception in the religious house of Alcala des Henarez. But the prolonged ordeal in prison had left him with a wasting illness, to which he succumbed shortly after his arrival on the Iberian peninsula - in 1577. SAINT GREGORY, BISHOP OF LANGRES    Saint Gregory of Langres  was one of the principal senators of Autun, and continued from the death of his wife a widower till the age of fifty-seven, at which time, for his singular virtues, he was compelled from his private penitential life, and consecrated bishop of Langres, which see he governed with admirable prudence and zeal thirty-three years, sanctifying his pastoral labours by the most profound humility, assiduous prayer, and extraordinary abstinence and mortification.  EXTRAORDINARY ABSTINENCE AND MORTIFICATION An incredible number of infidels were converted by him from idolatry, and worldly Christians from their disorders. SAINT RIGOBERT, BISHOP OF REIMS Saint Rigobert (Robert), abbot of Orbais, afterward bishop of Rheims [Reims], was favoured with the gift of miracles, and suffered an unjust banishment under Charles Martel.  PENANCE AND PRAYER He was recalled by Pepin, but finding Milo in possession of his see, retired to Gernicour, a village four or five leagues from Rheims, where he led a retired life in the exercises of penance and prayer.  He died about the year 750, and was buried in the church of St Peter at Gernicour, which he had built.  THE TRANSLATION OF HIS RELICS Hinomar, the fifth bishop from him, translated his relics to the abbey of St Theodoric, and nine years after, to the church of St Dionysius at Rheims.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JANUARY Saints celebrated on the 4th of January WELCOME! SAINT ELIZABETH ANN SETON, FOUNDRESS Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton grew up in New York society's upper class. In 1794, Elizabeth married the wealthy young William Seton, with whom she was deeply in love. William's father died within four years, leaving the young couple responsible for William's seven half-brothers and sisters and the family's import business. Shortly thereafter, her husband's business and health failed. William died of tuberculosis. Elizabeth's only consolation was that he had recently awakened to the things of God. SHE BECAME A CATHOLIC Elizabeth's serious concern for the spiritual well-being of her family and friends eventually led her to the Catholic Church. She asked the Blessed Virgin to lead her to the true faith and officially joined the Catholic Church in 1805.
