Saints celebrated on the 20th of November

VENERABLE AGNELO DE SOUZA, PRIEST

Venerable Father Angelo de Souza was born on January 21, 1869 to Miguel Arcanjo Mariano de Souza and his wife Maria Sinforosa Perpetua Megalhaes in Goa, India.

Tragically, Agnelo lost his both his parents at a young age. He and his siblings were brought up by an uncle.

VEN. AGNELO WAS CALLED TO THE PRIESTHOOD

After a rigorous ten year priestly training at Rachol Seminary and a crucial almost 10-year period of seclusion, fasting, sacrifice and intense prayer within the imposing walls of the Pilar Monastery which was then ensconced on a lush forested hill slope called Pilar after Our Lady of Pilar whose statue was previously brought to the monastery by the Franciscans, Agnelo became a very virtuous priest and an effective preacher.

HEALTH ISSUES

Agnelo had a frail physique which made him prone to illness. While studying at the Rachol Seminary he had to be given special leave to board with a neighbouring family. His otherwise commendable role as Parish Priest of Kumta and later Savordem had to be curtailed.

SPIRITUAL DIRECTOR

But his years as Spiritual Director at the Rachol Seminary was a major and crucial contribution to the Church in Goa as he trained, counselled and inspired many seminarians who would later, now as priest themselves, unhesitatingly gave glorious testimonies of Fr Angelo’s saintliness and life of heroic virtues.

MEEKNESS AND HUMILITY

Most notable in the life of Fr Agnelo was his meekness and humility, always obedient to his superiors. He was always the last to take his place at the meals table and that too at a corner place. In fact this corner position is maintained even today at the Pilar refractory. The name Angelo was taken from the name Agnes (the Saint on whose feast day he was born) which in turn is taken from the Latin word “agnus” meaning lamb, as in the Agnus Dei during Holy Mass.

Once, Fr Agnelo and his companion reached a Church, where he was to preach, late into the night. The Church was locked and the caretaker asleep inside. But rather than disturb the man, Fr Agnelo insisted that they sleep outside under a tree. He was meek and humble to the core.

AN EFFECTIVE PREACHER

But undoubtedly, Fr Agnelo’s greatest contribution was as preacher. Under the guidance of his Superiors, he would take assignments in far and near Goan Parishes.

Fr Agnelo collapsed and died on November 20, 1927. His remains rest at Pilar Seminary.

FATIMA APPARITION - AUGUST 13 The Fatima Children “BUT IN THE END MY IMMACULATE HEART WILL TRIUMPH.” But in the end my Immaculate Heart will triumph. The Holy Father will consecrate Russia to me; it will be converted, and a certain period of peace will be granted to the world. THE AUGUST 13 EVENTS On August 13, the children were in jail at Ourem. The civil administrator threatened to boil them in oil if they did not tell the Lady’s secret. Though badly frightened, they could not think of disobeying our Lady. At noon, there was a loud clap of thunder. Then, according to an eyewitness: “Right after the thunder came a flash, and immediately we all noticed a little cloud, very white, beautiful and bright,...

ST BERTHA OF AVENAY, ABBESS AND MARTYR - 1 MAY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MAY Saints celebrated on the 1st of May WELCOME! ST BERTHA OF AVENAY, ABBESS AND MARTYR The name Bertha (Berta) is derived from the Old German  bercht, brecht, bert etc., meaning shiny, splendid.  Saint Bertha, a martyr and abbess of Avenay (Aveniacum) in the diocese of Rheims, was descended from a noble family. Married to  St Gumbert (April 29), she obtained her husband's consent to join the monastic life. She then built the aforementioned monastery of Avenay. Following an apparition of the Blessed Virgin, she received many nuns there. Once, when Bertha was silently praying for water for her monastery, St Peter appeared to her and showed her a place where there was a spring, which then began to flow into the monastery in a running stream (ex quo fonte mox rivus egressus secutus est eam ad coenobium remeantem).  Finally, towards the end of the 7th century, she was killed by her stepsons - for what reason is not specified, perhaps in ...
