ST ANDREW AVELLINO, CONFESSOR - 10 NOVEMBER

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN NOVEMBER   Saints celebrated on the 10th of November WELCOME! SAINT ANDREW AVELLINO, CONFESSOR St Andrew Avellino was a native of Castro Nuovo, a small town in the kingdom of Naples, and born in 1520. In his infancy he gave early tokens of the most happy dispositions to virtue.  A beautiful complexion exposed his chastity to several snares and dangers; which he escaped by assiduous prayer, mortification, watchfulness over himself, and care in shunning all dangerous company.  To pretend a desire to serve God, and resist the world and vice, without a strenuous application to all the exercises of virtue, especially penance and prayer, he called a vain and foolish illusion.  HE WAS ORDAINED A PRIEST After mature deliberation he took the ecclesiastical tonsure, and was sent to Naples to study the civil and canon law. Being there promoted to the degree of doctor in laws, and to the dignity of the priesthood, he began to plead such causes in ...

ST AEDH MAC BRICC - 10 NOVEMBER

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN NOVEMBER   Saints celebrated on the 10th of November WELCOME! SAINT AEDH MAC BRICC, BISHOP OF KILDARE  Much information we have about this 6th century saint is contained in the Codex Salmanticensis.  It presents Aedh as a peacemaker between Munster and the Ui Neill, and between Mide and Tethbae, befitting his cross-border descent through his mother, Eithne, from the neighbouring Munster people of Muscraige Tire (north-west Co. Tipperary). AN EARLY LATIN LIFE An early Latin Life of Aedh, dating from the period 750 - 850, survives also. Its central concerns are with local violence and with the poverty and insecurity of women, especially nuns. Aedh seems to have had a profound interest in the well-being of religious women.  He frequently visited settlements of holy virgins who received him with the respect due to a man of his position. He died in 589.  ST AID "MECHPRECH" Medieval incantations against headache enumerate bodily organs ...

SAINT JUSTUS - 10 NOVEMBER

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN NOVEMBER   Saints celebrated on the 10th of November WELCOME! SAINT JUSTUS, BISHOP AND CONFESSOR ⬅️ Saintly Archbishops of Canterbury St Justus was a Roman by birth, and a learned and virtuous monk of St Gregory’s monastery, by whom he was sent into England in 601, to assist St Austin [Augustine of Canterbury] in preaching the faith there.  In 604, he was consecrated the first bishop of Rochester, and in 624, upon the death of St Mellitus, translated to the archiepiscopal see of Canterbury.  ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY Pope Boniface accompanied the pall which he sent him, with a letter in which he admired the fruit of his labours, in the great number of souls which he had initiated in the faithful service of God; and extolled his patience and zeal, exhorting him to persevere to the end, lest he should lose his crown.  THE FRUIT OF HIS LABOURS St Justus ordained St Romanus his successor at Rochester, and St Paulinus the first archbishop of...

SAINT FEAST DAY 10 NOVEMBER: ST LEO THE GREAT

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN NOVEMBER   Saints celebrated on the 10th of November WELCOME! SAINT LEO THE GREAT, POPE AND DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH ⬅️ Saintly Popes - Index Elected Pope in 440, Leo [Pope Leo I.] consolidated the organisation of the Church and its government from Rome at a time of civil and doctrinal disorder: Attila’s invasion was threatening, and the monophysite heresy was abroad. He persuaded the Huns to withdraw beyond the Danube, and negotiated with the Vandals when they seized Rome in 455.  THE COUNCIL OF CHALCEDON The Council of Chalcedon in 451 restated the doctrine of the incarnation, and the primacy of Peter. Many of his sermons and letters survive, and reveal him as a man of clear and forceful intellect and faith. He died about 461. PRAYER: God our Father, you will never allow the powers of hell to prevail against your Church, founded on the rock of the apostle Peter. Let the prayers of Pope Leo the Great keep us faithful to your truth and secure in your peace...
