  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JANUARY Saints celebrated on the 8th of January WELCOME! SAINT ADELAIDE, WIDOW The name Adelaide ( Adelheidis , Adelheid) is derived from the Old German, meaning: a noble person, noble-born, one who guards her nobility.  Saint Adelaide ( Adelheidis , Adelais [ Adela ]) was the wife of Count Baldwin IV of Flanders, nicknamed " the Pious ". He went to his eternal reward in 1067. Having become a widow, Saint Adelaide set out on a journey to Rome and there received the veil from the hands of  Pope Alexander II . However, she soon returned to her homeland and brought with her some of the relics of Saint Sidronius , which she gifted to the Benedictine monastery she had founded in Meessene (two hours from Ypres).   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN DECEMBER Saints celebrated on the 24th of December WELCOME! SAINT ADELA, ABBESS Saint Adela (Adula, Adulla) was the sister of Saint Irmene and daughter of King Dagobert II in France. She married a respected nobleman, named Alberich, and bore him a son, who later became the father of the holy Abbot Gregory in Utrecht.  SHE TOOK THE VEIL After the death of her husband, Adela devoted herself entirely to the exercises of godliness and took the veil in the convent she founded in Palatinate ( Palatiolum ), not far from Trier.  SHE WAS ABBESS OF THE COMMUNITY  From the life of her grandson, Saint Gregory, we know that in 722 she headed the community there as abbess. How long she lived after this is not known; but it is believed that she died around the year 734. Her will, drawn up on April 1, 732, is still preserved. SAINT ADELA OF NORMANDY, WIDOW Saint Adela was born sometime around the year 1067 and was the youngest daughter of William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy and King of England, and his wife Mathilde of Flanders. Adela was very well educated, spoke several languages, and was deeply religious.  SHE GOT MARRIED Around the year 1080, she married Stephen III, Count of Blois, who was one of the richest men in Europe. Together they had eleven children although some of them may have been Stephen’s children from a previous marriage because he was twenty years older than Adela. SHE SUPPORTED SCHOLARS AND POETS Adela supported scholars and poets at her court, and this significantly contributed to the spiritual and cultural life of her time.
