SAINT ADELAIDE, WIDOW The name Adelaide ( Adelheidis , Adelheid) is derived from the Old German, meaning: a noble person, noble-born, one who guards her nobility. Saint Adelaide ( Adelheidis , Adelais [ Adela ]) was the wife of Count Baldwin IV of Flanders, nicknamed " the Pious ". He went to his eternal reward in 1067. Having become a widow, Saint Adelaide set out on a journey to Rome and there received the veil from the hands of Pope Alexander II . However, she soon returned to her homeland and brought with her some of the relics of Saint Sidronius , which she gifted to the Benedictine monastery she had founded in Meessene (two hours from Ypres). Here in this monastery she died with a reputation for holiness and is venerated there on January 8.
