ST ALBERT, BISHOP OF LODI - 4 JULY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JULY Saints celebrated on the 4th of July WELCOME! SAINT ALBERT, BISHOP OF LODI Lodi Cathedral   Saint Albert ( Albertus ), Bishop of Lodi ( Laude Pompeia ) in northern Italy, was born in Ripalta ( Ripa Alta ) in the Diocese of Milan, into the Quadrelli family. A pious priest, asked to pray for Albert's mother, who was in mortal danger at his birth, prophesied that her baby would one day become a great man, which indeed came to pass. He grew up in the fear of God and in all virtue, and even in his youth was exceedingly charitable towards the poor.  At the time of the disputes between  Pope Alexander III and Emperor Frederick I, we find him as provost in his native Ripalta, from where he was expelled at the urging of Archbishop Galdinus de la Sala, who was decidedly on the side of  Pope Alexander III . He was elected bishop by the Lodensians on March 29, 1168.  As such, he administered his diocese with an apostolic spirit, shining...

He was a son of Godfrey III, Count of Louvain, and brother of Henry I, Duke of Lorraine and Brabant, and was chosen Bishop of Liège in 1191 by the suffrages of both people and chapter. The Emperor Henry VI violently intruded his own venal choice into the see, and Albert journeyed to Rome to appeal to Celestine III , who ordained him deacon, created him cardinal, and sent him away with gifts of great value and a letter of recommendation to the Archbishop of Rheims [Reims], where he was ordained priest and consecrated bishop.  Outside that city, soon after, he was set upon by eight German knights of the Emperor's following, who took advantage of the confiding kindness of the saintly bishop, and stabbed him to death.
