  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JANUARY Saints celebrated on the 9th of January THE BLACK NAZARENE The Black Nazarene was carved by an unknown Mexican artist from a dark wood in the 16th century in Mexico and then transported to the Philippines in 1606. It depicts Jesus carrying the cross.  PAPAL RECOGNITION Pope Innocent X granted recognition to the lay Confraternity of Santo Cristo Jesus Nazareno in 1650 for the promotion of the devotion to Jesus through the icon.  MAJOR PROCESSIONS  It was housed in several churches near Manila until it was finally placed in Quiapo Church in 1787 where it has been enshrined ever since. BLESSED TOMMASO REGGIO, BISHOP Blessed Tommaso Reggio was born in Genoa on January 9, 1818 to Marquis Giovanni Giacomo Reggio and Angela Maria Pareto. He received his ordination to the priesthood on September 18, 1841 after the conclusion of his ecclesial studies from Cardinal Placido Maria Tadini; he celebrated his first Mass in Gavi in Alessandria in the church of San Maurizio.  VIZE-RECTOR OF SEMINARIANS On July 15, 1842 he graduated from the Genoa college in theological studies and received his doctorate in those studies in 1843. Reggio was appointed in 1843 as the vice-rector of seminarians in Genoa.  THE CATHOLIC STANDARD He helped found The Catholic Standard on July 26, 1849 which was a newspaper but was to later close the paper on March 14, 1874 (with its final issue) after the papal declaration that the faithful could not vote in elections. He became Abbot of Nerida, a Benedictine monastery near Naples, when he was very young.  ADRIAN CONSIDERED HIMSELF UNWORTHY OF SO GREAT A DIGNITY Pope Vitalian intended to appoint him Archbishop of Canterbury to succeed St Deusdedit, who had died in 664, but Adrian considered himself unworthy of so great a dignity, and begged the Pope to appoint Theodore, a Greek monk, in his place. SAINT MARCIANA OF RUSUCCUR, MARTYR Saint Marciana was a native of Rusuccur in Mauritania, and courageously despising all worldly advantages, to secure to herself the possession of the precious jewel of heavenly grace.  She was called to the trial in the persecution of Diocletian, which was continued in Africa under his successors, till the death of Severus, who was declared Caesar in 305, and slain in 309. MARTYRDOM St Marciana was beaten with clubs, and her chastity exposed to the rude attempts of Pagan gladiators, in which danger God miraculously preserved her, and she became the happy instrument of the conversion of one of them to the faith: at length she was torn in pieces by a wild bull and a leopard, in the amphitheatre at Caesarea in Mauritania.
