BLESSED LAURENCE RICHARDSON, PRIEST AND MARTYR Colleges at the University of Douai, 16th century   Laurence Richardson  (alias Johnston) was born in Lancashire, and educated in Brazen-nose college, in Oxford, and was a fellow of that college, but quitting his fellowship and protestant religion, as a great many of the most hopeful subjects did in those days, he went over to Douay college in 1573, here having passed through his course of divinity, he was made priest in 1577.  His labours upon the mission were in his native country of Lancashire, where he was much esteemed for his extraordinary zeal and piety. BLESSED LAURENCE RICHARDSON, PRIEST AND MARTYR [Blessed]  Laurence Richardson , a son of Richard Johnson, of Great Crosby, Lancashire, was a Fellow of Brasenose College, Oxford, in or before 1569, and supplicated B.A. November 25, 1572. In 1573 he was at Douai, and on March 23, 1577, was ordained priest at Cateau-Cambresis.  He was sent on the mission July 27 following, and laboured in Lancashire. He was arrested in London on his way to France and imprisoned in Newgate, where he remained until the day of his indictment, November 16, 1581, when he was committed to the Queen's Bench Prison, and on the day of his condemnation, November 17, to the Tower, where he had no bedding for two months.
