ST GILBERT, BISHOP OF MEAUX - 13 FEBRUARY

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN FEBRUARY Saints celebrated on the 13th of February WELCOME! SAINT GILBERT, BISHOP OF MEAUX Saint Gilbert (Gilbertus, Gislebertus, [Aegilbertus])  was born in Ham on the Somme, in the Vermandois area, France. As a boy, around the middle of the 10th century, he was admitted to the renowned school of canons of Saint Quentin. After some time, he joined those canons, and was made an archdeacon of Meaux.  By joint election of the clergy and people, he became Bishop Erchenrad's successor after the latter's death. Gilbert is known to have started many pious foundations. He also overhauled the administration of the cathedral chapter's goods. For twenty years he graced the episcopal see of Meaux with virtues and miracles.  According to the Bollandists * Gilbert went to his eternal reward in 1004, Migne* reckons that his death occurred five years later. SAINT GILBERT, RELIGIOUS - 25 MAY

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MAY Saints celebrated on the 25th of May SAINT GILBERT, RELIGIOUS Saint Gilbert (Gilbertus), a native of Lorraine, served as the Emperor's soldier for a long time; but then, with much persecution on the part of his relatives, he entered a monastery and at length died there in great piety. Unfortunately it is not specified when and where. Emperor Otto I. brought his mortal remains to Rome and buried them in S. Bartolomeo in Isola. (Piazza I. 440.) GILBERT OF FONTENELLE, ABBOT - 4 SEPTEMBER

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN SEPTEMBER Saints celebrated on the 4th of September GILBERT OF FONTENELLE, ABBOT According to Mabillon* Gilbert became abbot of Fontenelle in 1062 (according to Bucelin* 1063). He was highly educated, led a life rich in merit, active in monastic discipline, promoted the liturgical chant etc. According to an epitaph communicated by the same source, Gilbert was born in Mainz [Germany] and was of noble origin. His death took place on September 4, 1089.  According to Butler*, where Gilbert is called "Saint Gilbert" he was the 30th abbot of Fontenelle, descended from a respected family in Germany, and left his fatherland with the monk Maurilius von Fecamp, who later became Archbishop of Rouen.  Bucelin* lists Gilbert on February 8, and states that he was initially a hermit, then became a monk at Fontenelle, and remained in constant contact with the holy Archbishop Maurilius of Rouen.  With Lechner* he appears under the name Gerbert and is called...

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN APRIL Saints celebrated on the 1st of April Prayer to the Angels and the Saints Heavenly Father, in praising Your Angels and Saints we praise Your glory, for by honouring them we honour You, their Creator. Their splendour shows us Your greatness, which infinitely surpasses that of all creation. In Your loving providence, You saw fit to send Your Angels to watch over us.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN FEBRUARY Saints celebrated on the 4th of February WELCOME! SAINT GILBERT, ABBOT   Saint Gilbert, Abbot, Founder of the Gilbertins, was born at Sempringham in Lincolnshire, and, after a clerical education, was ordained priest by the bishop of Lincoln.  HOLY PARISHIONERS For some time he taught a free-school, training up youth in regular exercises of piety and learning. The income of the parsonages of Sempringham and Tirington, being the right of his father, became his in 1123. He gave all the revenues of them to the poor, except a small sum for bare necessities, which he reserved out of the first living.  By his care his parishioners seemed to lead the lives of religious men, and were known to be of his flock, by their conversation, wherever they went.  THE RULE  He gave a rule to seven holy virgins, who lived in strict enclosure in a house adjoining to the wall of his parish church of St Andrew at Sempringham, and another afterwar...
