SAINT EUGENE I., POPE  ⬅️ Saintly Popes - Index Eugene I, Saint, was elected August 10, 654, and died at Rome, June 2, 657. Because he would not submit to Byzantine dictation in the matter of Monothelism, Saint Martin I was forcibly carried off from Rome (June 18, 653) and kept in exile till his death (September, 655).  What happened in Rome after his departure is not well known. For a time the Church was governed in the manner usual in those days during a vacancy of the Holy See, or during the absence of its occupant, viz., by the archpriest, the archdeacon, and the primicerius of the notaries. But after about a year and two months a successor was given to Martin in the person of Eugene (August 10, 654).  He was a Roman of the first ecclesiastical region of the city, and was the son of Rufinianus. Derry The first establishment of the see of Derry was at a place called Ardfrath , on the river Derg, of which this saint [Eugenius, Eugene, Owen] was the first bishop.  AN EXCELLENT AND ASSIDUOUS PREACHER He was an excellent and assiduous preacher, and is said to have been of the royal blood of the kings of Leinster.  He died on this day in 618, and was buried in his own churchyard, over whose sepulchre a chapel was afterwards built. SAINT EUGENIUS OF PARIS, BISHOP AND MARTYR Saint Eugenius was a disciple of St Dionysius, first bishop of Paris, and suffered martyrdom at Paris soon after him, according to the New Paris Breviary in A.D. 275.  A DISCIPLE OF ST DIONYSIUS His relics were translated to Toledo, in Spain, in 1148, as is related by Mariana.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MAY Saints celebrated on the 21st of May WELCOME! SAINT EUGENE DE MAZENOD, BISHOP Bishop of Marseilles, and founder of the Congregation of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, born at Aix, in Provence, August 1782; died at Marseilles May 21, 1861.  A PIOUS DISPOSITION De Mazenod was the offspring of a noble family of southern France, and even in his tender years he showed unmistakable evidence of a pious disposition and a high and independent spirit.
