THE DEDICATION OF ST MICHAEL'S CHURCH - 29 SEPTEMBER

WELCOME! THE DEDICATION OF ST MICHAEL'S CHURCH ➡️ Michaelmas Day [Or, the Festival of St Michael and All the Holy Angels.]  This festival has been kept with great solemnity on September 29 ever since the fifth age, and was certainly celebrated in Apulia in 493.  The dedication of the famous church of St Michael on Mount Gargano, in Italy, gave occasion to the institution of this feast in the West, which is hence called in the Martyrologies of St Jerome, Bede, and others. The dedication of St Michael’s church in Rome, upon Adrian’s Mole, which was performed by Pope Boniface IV in 610, and that of several other churches in the West, in honour of this archangel, were performed on this same day. Churches were likewise erected in the East, in honour of St Michael and other holy angels, from the time when the Christian worship was publicly established by the conversion of Constantine, doubtless upon the model of little oratories and churches, which had been formerly raised in...

MICHAELMAS DAY - 29 SEPTEMBER

WELCOME! MICHAELMAS DAY ⬅️ The Dedication of St Michael's Church Michaelmas Day, in England and other countries, is one of the regular quarter-days for settling rents and accounts; but it is no longer remarkable for the hospitality with which it was formerly celebrated. Stubble-geese being esteemed in perfection about this time, most families had one dressed on Michaelmas Day. In some parishes (Isle of Skye) they had a procession on this day and baked a cake, called St Michael’s bannock. The hymns of the Roman Office are said to have been composed by St Rabanus Maurus of Fulda (died 856). In art Saint Michael is represented as an angelic warrior, fully armed with helmet, sword, and shield (often the shield bears the Latin inscription: Quis ut Deus), standing over the dragon, whom he sometimes pierces with a lance. He also holds a pair of scales in which he weighs the souls of the departed, or the book of life, to show that he takes part in the judgment.  His feast (September...

SAINT FEAST DAY 29 SEPTEMBER: ST MICHAEL, ARCHANGEL

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN SEPTEMBER Saints celebrated on the 29th of September WELCOME! THE FEAST OF ST MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL (MICHAELMAS) The Feast of Saint Michael, or Michaelmas Day, is September 29. As it is not certain just what church is commemorated as having been dedicated on this day, the pious belief has gained favour that the entire Catholic Church is here indicated. For by casting the rebel spirits into the abyss, St Michael dedicated the Church Triumphant in Heaven as the peaceful abode of the Angels; and as he wards off the devil and his colleagues from the Church upon earth, he has dedicated the Church Militant as the secure dwelling place of the faithful upon earth. Finally, as helper and consoler of the souls in Purgatory, the Church Suffering is placed under his care. HE WARDS OFF THE DEVIL  This feast of St Michael has ever been one of the outstanding feasts of the Church. However, the liturgy for the feast is not confined to the veneration of St Michael al...
