  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MAY Saints celebrated on the 15th of May WELCOME! ORESTES, MARTYR OF JERUSALEM Orestes, remembered on May 15, a patriarch and martyr of Jerusalem, of noble family, a converted Mohammedan, had to endure most cruel punishments because of his steadfastness in the Christian faith, and was beheaded afterwards. These events took place in A.D. 1006.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JANUARY Saints celebrated on the 12th of January WELCOME! SAINT JOHN II., BISHOP OF JERUSALEM Saint John (Johannes), the 44th bishop of Jerusalem and the second of this name, is listed in the Bollandists* (Jan. I. 719) among the Praetermissi . A work by the Dutchman Johannes Palaeonydorus, i.e. of Oudewater (aqua vetus) states that the holy bishop John II died on January 12. Erroneously enough, the old "Encyclopedia of Saints" (p. 1058), and consequently also Zedler * (XIV. 1006), and the General Mart.* (p. 14) , give John II the suffix Palaeonydorus with the place Oudewater and the designation "Dutchman" (Batavus), as if this bishop John of Jerusalem himself was a Dutchman from Oudewater, surnamed Palaeonydorus . In a handwritten Horarium Sanctorum Bishop John II is mentioned on March 6. According to the Bollandist * Papebroch, this John II was the 42nd Bishop and 1st Patriarch of Jerusalem, reigning from A.D. 389 to 415. Apparently...

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN OCTOBER Saints celebrated on the 22nd of October SAINT MARK, BISHOP OF JERUSALEM, MARTYR Today, we also commemorate Saint Mark . The Roman Martyrology states:  "At Jerusalem, the blessed bishop Mark, a celebrated and learned man, who was the first Gentile that governed the church of Jerusalem. His brief episcopate was rewarded by the palm of martyrdom, under the emperor Antoninus." The Roman Martyrology states:  "The same day, the birthday of the Saints Flavian II., bishop of Antioch, and  Elias , bishop of Jerusalem, who were driven into exile by the emperor Anastasius, in defense of the Council of Chalcedon, and went victoriously to God."   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JUNE Saints celebrated on the 7th of June SAINT JOHN, BISHOP OF JERUSALEM Saint John, the seventh bishop of Jerusalem, but the first by that name, was a man full of virtue.  Distinguished with the gift of miracles, he died in the year 116. Migne *, however, supposes the death of this holy patriarch to have occurred at the end of the 2nd century. Saint John is also mentioned by the Bollandists * - on August 23 and May 10.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH   Saints celebrated on the 11th of March WELCOME! SAINT SOPHRONIUS, PATRIARCH OF JERUSALEM, CONFESSOR  Saint Sophronius was a native of Damascus, and made such a progress in learning that he obtained the name of the Sophist. He lived twenty years near Jerusalem, under the direction of John Moschus, an holy hermit, without engaging himself in a religious state.  THEY TRAVELLED TO EGYPT These two great men visited together the monasteries of Egypt, and were detained by St John the Almoner, at Alexandria, about the year 610, and employed by him two years in extirpating the Eutychians, and in reforming his diocese.  John Moschus wrote there his Spiritual Meadow which he dedicated to Sophronius.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN SEPTEMBER Saints celebrated on the 14th of September WELCOME! SAINT ALBERT, PATRIARCH OF JERUSALEM  Saint Albert was Patriarch of Jerusalem, one of the conspicuous ecclesiastics in the troubles between the Holy See and Frederick Barbarossa; his date of birth is uncertain; he died September 14, 1215.  He was in fact asked by both Pope and Emperor to act as umpire in their dispute and, as a reward, was made Prince of the Empire.  He was born in the diocese of Parma, became a canon regular in the Monastery of Mortara (not Mortura, as Butler has it) in the Milanese, and after being Bishop of Bobbio, for a short time, was translated to the see of Vercelli.
