  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN DECEMBER Saints celebrated on the 16th of December WELCOME! SAINT ADELAIDE, EMPRESS Saint Adelaide, or Alice , of Germany, A.D. 999, Dec. 16. She was the daughter of the Duke of Burgundy , and early married Lothaire, King of Italy. After his death she was imprisoned by his successor at Pavia, but escaped , and fled to Germany, where she married the Emperor, Otho I.  She spent her life in good works , and herself educated her son most carefully. Yet after the death of his father, he allowed himself to be influenced for evil by his wife, and he banished Adelaide from court.  Misfortune, however, befell him, and he recalled his mother, though his wife continued hostile to her. After a reign of nine years Otho II and his wife both died, and Adelaide became Regent. She continued her works of mercy, particularly encouraging and building religious houses.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JUNE Saints celebrated on the 11th of June WELCOME! SAINT ALEYDIS OF SCHAERBEEK, VIRGIN Saint Aleydis (Alice) was born around 1200 in Schaerbeek in Belgium. She was a frail and friendly child, and from her seventh year she lived in the Cistercian Monastery (Maria Kammeren) just outside Brussels. As an adult she took vows there, and she was a much-liked member of the religious community.  OFFERING HER SUFFERINGS IN UNION WITH OUR LORD'S PASSION FOR THE HOLY SOULS IN PURGATORY Not long after, she got leprosy, and was henceforth housed in a separate building on the outskirts of the monastery area. Leprosy had come to Europe at the time of the Crusade and was greatly feared. SAINT ALICE, OR ADELAIDE, EMPRESS The second kingdom of Burgundy, called also of Arles, was erected by Charles the Bald, emperor and king of France, who, in 879, bestowed Burgundy, Provence, Bresse, and Dauphine, with his title on his brother-in-law Bose, descended by the mother from Lewis Debonnair.  Rudolph or Ralph II, king of Burgundy, was father to Saint Alice [ Saint Adelaide ] whom he left at his death, in 937, only six years old.  At sixteen she was married to Lothaire, king of Italy, by whom she had a daughter named Emma, who was afterwards married to Lothaire, king of France.  A YOUNG WIDOW The death of our saint’s husband, which happened about the year 949, left her a young widow, and the afflictions with which she was visited contributed perfectly to disengage her heart from the world, and make her devote herself to the practice of piety, which had been from her ...
