ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JANUARY Saints celebrated on the 18th of January WELCOME! SAINT BEATRIX OF ESTE THE YOUNGER, WIDOW She died in 1262. Custom seems to warrant the giving the title Saint to one of the two holy nuns named Beatrix d’Este. She belonged to the family of the Norman Dukes of Apulia and was herself the daughter of the Marques of Ferrara.  SHE DEVOTED HERSELF TO THE SERVICE OF GOD She was betrothed to Galeazzo Manfredi of Vicenza, but he died of his wounds, after a battle, just before the wedding day, and his bride refused to return home, but attended by some of her maidens, devoted herself to the service of God, following the Benedictine Rule, at San Lazzaro just outside Ferrara. SAINT PRISCA, VIRGIN AND MARTYR She was a noble Roman lady, and after many torments finished her triumph by the sword, about the year 275.  Her relics are preserved in the ancient church which bears her name in Rome, and gives title to a cardinal.  SHE IS MENTIONED IN ALMOST ALL WESTERN MARTYROLOGIES She is mentioned in the sacramentary of St Gregory, and in almost all western Martyrologies.  The acts of her martyrdom deserve no regard: St. Paul, in the last chapter of his epistle to the Romans, salutes Aquila, a person of Pontus, of Jewish extraction, and Priscilla, whom he and all churches thanked, because they had exposed themselves for his sake.  He mentions the church which assembled in their house, which he attributes to no other among the twenty-five Christians whom he saluted, and were then at Rome.  This agrees with the immemorial tradition at Rome, th...

SAINT MARGARET OF HUNGARY, PRINCESS AND VIRGIN She was the daughter of King Bela I of Hungary and his wife Marie Laskaris, she was born in 1242 and died January 18, 1271.  HER PARENTS VOWED THAT THEIR NEXT CHILD SHOULD BE DEDICATED TO RELIGION According to a vow which her parents made when Hungary was liberated from the Tatars that their next child should be dedicated to religion, Margaret, in 1245 entered the Dominican Convent of Veszprem.  Invested with the habit at the age of four, she was transferred in her tenth year to the Convent of the Blessed Virgin founded by her parents on the Hasen Insel (an isle) near Buda, the Margareten Insel near Budapest today, and where the ruins of the convent are still to be seen. Here Margaret passed all her life, which was consecrated to contemplation and penance, and was venerated as a saint during her lifetime.  SHE APPEARS TO HAVE TAKEN SOLEM...
