  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JUNE Saints celebrated on the 12th June WELCOME! SAINT BASILIDES AND COMPANIONS, MARTYRS These holy men, Saints Basilides , Cyrinus, Nabor , and Nazarius (June 12), martyrs under Diocletian, were Roman soldiers distinguished by both birth and valor. Because they proclaimed the Christian doctrine to Emperor Diocletian, they were seized by the City Prefect Aurelius and - refusing to sacrifice to the Roman gods - thrown into a dungeon, which was suddenly illuminated by a heavenly light in response to their prayers. Moved by this miraculous event, the jailer Marcellus, along with many others, converted to the Christian faith. Later, having steadfastly professed their faith before Emperor Maximian, they were scourged with scorpions (a type of scourge) and once again cast into prison. Finally, they were beheaded and their bodies thrown to wild beasts; the animals, however, did not touch them, and the Christians subsequently gave them an honourable burial. The ...

SAINT BASILIDES AND COMPANIONS, MARTYRS Encyclopedia of Saints   According to the Roman Martyrology * , Saint Basilides (commemorated on  June 10 ) was a martyr who suffered death in Rome under Emperor Aurelian and the City Prefect Plato, alongside Saints Cripus (Cripodes), Mandalis (Mandal), and twenty others. However, according to the Bollandists *, this Saint Basilides is identical to the one listed next ; they argue that the names of his companions in [their copy of the] Roman Martyrology * are recorded incorrectly - specifically, that " Tripolis " should read " Tripus " and " Magdaletes " should read " Mandalis " - implying that Saint Magdaletes , who was martyred at Tripolis, has been erroneously linked with Saint Basilides. The Roman Martyrology states:  "At Alexandria, the passion of Saint Basilides, under the emperor Severus. He protected from the insults of profligate men the saintly virgin Potamioena, whom he was leading to execution, and received from her the reward of his pious action. For, at the end of three days, she appeared to him, and placing a crown on his head, not only converted him to Christ, but by her prayers made of him, after a short combat, a glorious martyr."
