SAINT GREGORY, BISHOP OF LANGRES  Langres Cathedral   Saint Gregory , Bishop of Langres, commemorated on January 4 and May 13, became immensely popular as a senator of Autun through his strict justice. His wife Armentaria bore him two sons,  Saint Tetricus , later also Bishop of Langres, and Gregory, the grandfather of  Saint Gregory of Tours . After serving as a senator for 40 years, he renounced this office to dedicate himself physically to God alone, whom he carried in his heart. When his wife died, he was unexpectedly ordained a priest, and soon afterward, by the joint election of the clergy and people, was elevated to Bishop of Langres. As such, he worked through word and example, as well as through the apostolic wisdom with which he was endowed, at the Synods of Epaone (in 517) and Auvergne (in 535). SAINT GREGORY, BISHOP OF AUXERRE In the early 6th century, Saint Gregory, the 10th bishop of Auxerre (Antisiodorum), ruled his church for twelve years. His successor was Saint Optatus . According to handwritten notes about the bishops of Auxerre, which were available to the Bollandist Sollier , Saint Gregory died on May 29. The Roman Martyrology * lists him on December 19. We could not find his name in Butler's works . (Mg.) SAINT GREGORY OF NYSSA, BISHOP AND CONFESSOR [Also celebrated on January 10.] Saint Gregory of Nyssa was younger brother to St Basil the Great; and was educated in polite and sacred studies. HE RENOUNCED THE WORLD He afterwards renounced the world, and was ordained lector; but was overcome by his violent passion for eloquence to teach rhetoric. St Gregory Nazianzen wrote to him in the strongest terms, exhorting him to renounce that paltry or ignoble glory, as he elegantly calls it.  BISHOP OF NYSSA This letter produced its desired effect. Pope Saint Gregory III was the son of a Syrian named John. The date of his birth is not known.
