SAINT HUGH, ARCHBISHOP OF ROUEN - 9 APRIL

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN APRIL Saints celebrated on the 9th of April SAINT HUGH, ARCHBISHOP OF ROUEN Saint Hugh, a son of Count or Duke Drogo of Champagne and Burgundy and his wife Adeltrudis, grandson of Pipin von Heristall and nephew of Charles  Martell, was born around A.D. 680 and is therefore not to be confused with a much later Hugh (the son of Charlemagne, who, however, was never Archbishop of Rouen, although some erroneously list him as such).  His education was taken care of by the godly matron Anfledis, wife of the Majordomo Warado (died around 684) and Hugh's maternal grandmother. Along with the sciences, the boy was instructed well in matters of piety. After he was ordained as a priest, he became primicerius at the cathedral chapter in Metz. According to a document from A.D. 715, which is still extant, Hugh donated the Villa Vigy (Vigiacum) to St Arnulph's Abbey. In general, he used his rich income and his entire patrimony for religious and ecclesiastical ...

SAINT HUGH OF POITIERS - 20 APRIL

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN APRIL Saints celebrated on the 20th of April SAINT HUGH OF POITIERS Saint Hugh was born at Poitiers (Pictavium) of wealthy parents. Concerned about a good upbringing of their child, they brought him to the monastery of St Savinus, which had been founded by Charlemagne.   Here he stayed and was ordained to the priesthood around the time when Charles the Bald ruled the Frankish kingdom, that is between A.D. 843 and 877.  Soon afterwards he was selected to assist Abbot Arnulf in restoring St Martin's Abbey at Autun (Augustodunum or Civitas Aeduorum). Among his brethren there was also a former  Count Badillo or Badilo, who according to the Bollandists *, is probably the same who later became Abbot of Leuze (Lutosa).  A few years later, Hugo accompanied Blessed Berno in order to reform the Baumes (Balma) monastery in the diocese of Besançon, whereupon both lived in the monastery at Cluny as its first monks. Berno became abbot here,...

SAINT HUGH OF BONNEVAUX, ABBOT - 1 APRIL

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN APRIL Saints celebrated on the 1st of April WELCOME! SAINT HUGH OF BONNEVAUX, ABBOT Saint Hugh of Bonnevaux came from a noble family. As St Bernard relates in his 351st letter, Hugh ignored the objections of his relatives and joined the Cistercian Order. The monastery that was to become his new home, Maizieres or Mézières (Maceriae), had been founded around the year 1132. Within the diocese of Chalon (Cabillonum), it was situated not far from Beaune (Belna). After a while, however, Hugh, assailed by most severe temptations, felt on the brink of returning to the world. Tormented by this thought, he went to church and, on his knees, with floods of tears and hands raised to heaven, he prayed for enlightenment.  Looking up, he suddenly perceived the gentle Mother of Mercy standing above the altar, enveloped in light as in a robe, and it seemed to Hugh as if he saw Jesus, her Son, beside her, and at the same time His whole life and suffering, His Resur...

ST HUGH, ABBOT OF CLUNY, CONFESSOR - 29 APRIL

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN APRIL Saints celebrated on the 29th of April WELCOME! ST HUGH, ABBOT OF CLUNY, CONFESSOR Saint Hugh of Cluny was a prince related to the sovereign house of the dukes of Burgundy, and had his education under the tuition of his pious mother, and under the care of Hugh, bishop of Auxerre, his great uncle.  HIS LIFE WAS REMARKABLY INNOCENT AND HOLY From his infancy he was exceedingly given to prayer and meditation, and his life was remarkably innocent and holy. The world he always looked upon as a tempestuous sea, worked up by the storms of human passions, and concealing rocks and shelves everywhere under its boisterous waves.  HE WAS SO MOVED THAT HE SET OFF IMMEDIATELY In obedience to the will of his father, he learned the exercises of fencing and riding. But one day hearing an account of the wonderful sanctity of the monks of Cluny, under St Odilo, he was so moved, that he set out that moment, and going thither, humbly begged the monastic habit....
