ST LEO III., POPE - 12 JUNE

He was elected on the very day his predecessor was buried (December 26, 795), and consecrated on the following day. It is quite possible that this haste may have been due to a desire on the part of the Romans to anticipate any interference of the Franks with their freedom of election.  THE ROMAN FREEDOM OF ELECTION Leo was a Roman, the son of Atyuppius and Elizabeth.
