SAINT ERNEUS, ABBOT Of noble family, Saint Erneus ( Ernaeus, Herneus , Erineus , French: St-Ernie ) was born in the province of Aquitaine. He flourished in the sixth century. Bishop Innocent of Mans (Cenomanum) ordained Erneus a priest, and then made him abbot of Céaulcé (in the French province of Maine). Graced with a most amazing gift of miracles, Erneus eventually concluded his holy life in the peace of the Lord. For a long time he remained relatively unnoticed outside his province, until finally, in 1625, Benedictus Gonnous dedicated a memorial to him in his "Life of the Occidental Fathers", after which his name started to be listed in some of the martyrologies.
