  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN FEBRUARY Saints celebrated on the 28th February WELCOME! THE MARTYRS OF THE ALEXANDRIAN PLAGUE [On] February 28, the Church remembers the heroic charitable acts of the Martyrs of the Alexandrian Plague. A PLAGUE SPREAD THROUGH THE ROMAN EMPIRE In the middle of the third century, a plague spread through much of the Roman Empire. The illness was so lethal and so contagious that it was reported that in one day over 5,000 people died in Rome. The plague was similarly catastrophic in Alexandria, Egypt. Frightened by the plague, many of the pagan residents of Alexandria left the city and abandoned those who were victims of this terrible disease. People were left to die alone and to remain unburied on the streets. THEY CHOSE TO STAY BEHIND Amidst these horrors a great number of Christians of the city, priests and people, chose to stay behind and voluntarily nurse the dying and bury the dead.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN FEBRUARY Saints celebrated on the 28th of February JULIAN VORONOVSKY, BISHOP "HE REBUILT THE UKRAINIAN CATHOLIC CHURCH" Bishop Julian Voronovsky [was] the last Ukrainian Catholic Bishop to be secretly consecrated during the Soviet-era persecution of the Church. [He] died aged 76 [on February 28, 2013]. Words at his memorial service said, “We thank God for this spiritual giant, a man of great heart and heroic faith…  HIS GREATNESS WAS NOT THAT OF EARTHLY GLORY His greatness wasn’t that of earthly glory, estates, awards and honours, since he lived humbly among the poor of Christ, with nowhere to lay his head. His greatness was that of God’s love.” Born in 1936 in Busk, Bishop Julian trained as an engineer at Ukraine’s Polygraphic Institute overseeing construction projects.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN FEBRUARY Saints celebrated on the 28th of February WELCOME! BLESSED LOUIS SHINZABURO, MARTYR "PRAY, PRAY MUCH!" Blessed Louis Shinzaburo was numbered among 32 Catholics who at the beginning of 1627 were languishing as prisoners in Shimabara, Japan, having been arrested for their faith by the country’s pagan regime.  15 of these were put to death by drowning on February 21. On the garments of the remaining Catholics, cloths were sewn bearing the words: “This punishment is inflicted upon these ones for not having abandoned the religion of Christ”. Their persecutors mutilated their hands, cutting off many of their fingers. THEY PREPARED THEMSELVES WITH PRAYER Moved by the Catholics’ constancy, several non-Catholic prisoners repented of their own crimes and attempted to bandage the Catholics’ hands with paper. 17 Catholics were condemned to die in “the Mouth of Hell”, a much-feared, sulfurous volcanic crater on Mount Unzen.
