SAINT CUTHBERT MAINE, PRIEST AND MARTYR Cuthbert Maine [ Mayne ] was the first missionary priest that suffered in England for religious matters, and the protomartyr of Douay college, and all the seminaries. I have a short account of his life and death in English, published in 1582: I have also a more ample account of him in a Latin manuscript of Douay college. I shall present the reader with an abstract of the former, in the very words of the author, who was a close friend of Mr Maine; choosing rather to offend the ears with the old language of the writer, than, by new modelling the narration, to lessen its authority, or spoil its amiable simplicity. SAINT CUTHBERT MAYNE, PRIEST AND MARTYR  ⬅️ Martyrs of England and Wales Martyr, born at Yorkston, near Barnstaple, Devonshire (baptised March 20, 1543-4); died at Launceston, Cornwall, November 29, 1577.  He was the son of William Mayne; his uncle was a schismatical priest, who had him educated at Barnstaple Grammar School, and he was ordained a Protestant minister at the age of eighteen or nineteen.  He then went to Oxford, first to Saint Alban’s Hall, then to Saint John’s College, where he took the degree of M.A. in 1570. AT OXFORD He there made the acquaintance of Blessed Edmund Campion , Gregory Martin, the controversialist, Humphrey Ely, Henry Shaw, Thomas Bramston, O.S.B., Henry Holland, Jonas Meredith, Roland Russell, and William Wiggs. SAINT CUTHBERT, BISHOP ➡️ The Translation of Saint Cuthbert Saint Cuthbert, Bishop of Lindisfarne, patron of Durham, was born about 635; died March 20, 687. His emblem is the head of St Oswald, king and martyr, which he is represented as bearing in his hands. He was probably born in the neighbourhood of Mailros (Melrose) of lowly parentage, for as a boy he used to tend sheep on the mountain-sides near that monastery. HE USED TO TEND SHEEP While still a child living with his foster-mother Kenswith his future lot as bishop had been foretold by a little play-fellow, whose prophecy had a lasting effect on his character. In the year 651, while watching his sheep, he saw in a vision the soul of St Aidan carried to heaven by angels, and inspired by this became a monk at Mailros.  Yet it would seem that the troubled state of the country hindered him from carrying out his resolution at once.
