  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JANUARY Saints celebrated on the 22nd of January BENEDICT XV., POPE  ⬅️ Saintly Popes - Index Giacomo Della Chiesa was born November 21, 1854 in Pegli, Kingdom of Sardinia; he died January 22, 1922 at Rome. After graduating from the University of Genoa, he studied for the priesthood in the Collegio Capranica in Rome and entered the papal diplomatic service, later spending four years in Spain before being employed in the department of the secretary of state (1887).  Pope Pius X elevated him to the Archbishopric of Bologna, (1907), and Cardinalate (1914). He was elected pope a month after the outbreak of World War I, and the greater part of his papacy was occupied with war problems. Trying to follow a policy of strict neutrality, Benedict abstained from condemning any action of the belligerents.  He concentrated the church’s efforts toward the alleviation of unnecessary suffering. At the age of thirteen he went to the Collegium Clementianum in Rome where he studied rhetoric, philosophy, and theology. St Thomas Aquinas was his favourite author, but the bent of his own mind was towards historical and legal studies in which latter he excelled, as well in civil as in ecclesiastical law. In 1694, though only nineteen, he received the degree of Doctor of Theology and Doctor Utriusque Juris (canon and civil law).  On the death of Innocent XII he was made consistorial advocate by Clement XI, and shortly afterwards Consultor of the Holy Office. BONIFACE VIII., POPE  ⬅️ Saintly Popes - Index Benedetto Gaetano was born at Anagni about 1235; died at Rome, October 11, 1303. He was the son of Loffred, a descendant of a noble family originally Spanish, but long established in Italy, first at Gaeta and later at Anagni. Through his mother he was connected with the house of Segni, which had already given three illustrious sons to the Church, Innocent III, Gregory IX, and Alexander IV.  Benedetto had studied at Todi and at Spoleto in Italy, perhaps also at Paris, had obtained the doctorate in canon and civil law, and been made a canon successively at Anagni, Todi, Paris, Lyons, and Rome.
