SAINT ISABELLE OF FRANCE   Saint Isabelle ( Isabel ) was the daughter of Louis VIII and of his wife, Blanche of Castille, born in March, 1225; died at Longchamp, February 23, 1270.  PIETY AND MODESTY Saint Louis IX , King of France (1226-70), was her brother. When still a child at court, Isabelle, or Elizabeth, showed an extraordinary devotion to exercises of piety, modesty, and other virtues. By Bull of May 26, 1254,  Innocent IV allowed her to retain some Franciscan fathers as her special confessors.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN NOVEMBER Saints celebrated on the 17th of November   WELCOME! SAINT ELIZABETH OF HUNGARY, WIDOW Saint Elizabeth was born in 1207, daughter of the King of Hungary; she married Louis the Landgrave of Thuringia in 1221. She turned naturally to the ascetic life, and was influenced by Franciscans she met in Germany. After her husband’s death on the Crusade in 1227, she lived with complete austerity, visiting the poor and caring for the sick. She died in 1231. PRAYER: Dear Saint Elizabeth, you were always poor in spirit, most generous toward the poor, faithful to your husband, and fully consecrated to your Divine Bridegroom. Grant your help to widows and widowers and keep them faithful to their heavenly Lord. Teach them how to cope with their loss to make use of their time in the service of God our Lord. Amen.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JULY Saints celebrated on the 4th of July WELCOME! SAINT ELIZABETH OF PORTUGAL, WIDOW Saint Elizabeth of Portugal was born in 1271 into the royal family of Aragon. At the age of twelve she was married to the king of Portugal, and had two children. The marriage was unhappy, and led to many disputes between the families. She lived a life of penance, prayer and fasting. After her husband’s death she renounced the world and lived in poverty as a member of the Third Order of Saint Francis. War broke out between her son and grandson, and while attempting to reconcile them, she died in 1336. PRAYER: Father of peace and love, you gave Saint Elizabeth the gift of reconciling enemies. By the help of her prayers give us the courage to work for peace among men, that we may be called the sons of God. SAINT ELIZABETH OF SCONAUGE, VIRGIN AND ABBESS Three monasteries in Germany bear the name of Sconauge [Schönau]: one of Cistercian monks near Heidelberg, founded by Buggo, bishop of Worms in 1135; another of nuns of the same Order in Franconia; a third of monks of the Order of  Saint Benedict in the diocese of Triers, four German miles from Bingen, was founded by Hildelin, a nobleman, who, in 1125, took himself the monastic habit, and was chosen first abbot.  SHE WAS CHOSEN ABBESS Not far distant he built a great nunnery of the same Order and name which is now extinct, though the three former remain to this day.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JANUARY Saints celebrated on the 4th of January WELCOME! SAINT ELIZABETH ANN SETON, FOUNDRESS Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton grew up in New York society's upper class. In 1794, Elizabeth married the wealthy young William Seton, with whom she was deeply in love. William's father died within four years, leaving the young couple responsible for William's seven half-brothers and sisters and the family's import business. Shortly thereafter, her husband's business and health failed. William died of tuberculosis. Elizabeth's only consolation was that he had recently awakened to the things of God. SHE BECAME A CATHOLIC Elizabeth's serious concern for the spiritual well-being of her family and friends eventually led her to the Catholic Church. She asked the Blessed Virgin to lead her to the true faith and officially joined the Catholic Church in 1805. SAINT ELIZABETH OF THE TRINITY, VIRGIN Saint Elizabeth of the Trinity was born in 1880 in the military base at Avord in France. Her father was a Captain. St Elizabeth was baptised in the chapel of the military base. Sadly, her father died when St Elizabeth was seven years old and the family moved to Dijon. St Elizabeth had a terrible temper as a child, but after receiving her First Holy Communion she was able to gain more self-control as she deepened her understanding of God. SHE GAINED AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE MOST HOLY TRINITY She also gained a profound understanding of the Most Holy Trinity, which she cultivated in ardent devotion. St Elizabeth started to visit the sick, sing in the church choir and taught religion to the young people who worked at the local factories.
