  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN AUGUST Saints celebrated on the 18th of August SAINTS LEO AND JULIANA, MARTYRS Today, we also commemorate Saints Leo and Juliana.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JUNE Saints celebrated on the 30th of June SAINTS CAIUS AND LEO Today, we also commemorate Saints Caius and Leo. The Roman Martyrology states:  "The same day, the saints Caius, priest, and Leo, subdeacon."   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN APRIL Saints celebrated on the 22nd of April SAINT LEO, BISHOP OF SENS Saint Leo, according to Saussayus * the 17th and conforming to Zedler * the 19th bishop of Sens (Senonensis) in France, was the successor of Bishop Paul and lived at the time of Childebert, King of the Franks.  He was a man of mighty word and deed, and attended several councils held in France. The holy bishop, with as much prudence as steadfastness, resisted King Childebert, who wanted to meddle too much in spiritual affairs. After a holy life and faithful administration of the See, St Leo died around the year 540 ( Migne * states 541), and was buried in the church of St Gervasius and Protasius. At his invocation, God performed many miracles, which is why this church later bore his name and became the parish church of Sens. The Roman Martyrology, too, lists his name on April 22.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN APRIL Saints celebrated on the 29th of April SAINT LEO, BISHOP OF SAMOS Saint Leo, bishop on the island of Samos, a Greek by birth, renounced everything the world could offer him for Jesus' sake. He led a life full of miracles and merits and died on the island of Samos, in the Aegean Sea, where he also was buried at first. Later his body was taken away by the Venetians, whose ships stayed in the port of Samos for some time. They brought his mortal remains to the city of Malamocco and handed them over to the local bishop Leo, who buried them with great solemnity. St Leo's body rested thus until A.D. 1101, where the greater part of the place was destroyed by a flood and the episcopal seat was transferred to Chiozza (Fossa Clodia).  Thereupon Leo's relics were translated to the church of St Servulus in Venice, where many miracles took place at his tomb.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN NOVEMBER Saints celebrated on the 20th of November   SAINT LEO OF NONANTOLA, ABBOT  Even as a cleric, Saint Leo led a strict monastic life, and when he actually did enter the monastery at Nonantola in Modenese, he excelled in all virtues, especially humility.  After being elected abbot against his will, he resigned his office two years later, notified Emperor Otto, and went to Rome, where he prepared himself for eternity. He died on November 20 around the year 1000. A blind man received his sight at Leo's grave. (Buc.) Their splendour shows us Your greatness, which infinitely surpasses that of all creation. In Your loving providence, You saw fit to send Your Angels to watch over us. Grant that we may always be under their protection and one day enjoy their company in heaven. Heavenly Father, You are glorified in Your Saints, for their glory is the crowning of Your gifts.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN FEBRUARY   Saints celebrated on the 18th of February WELCOME! SAINTS LEO AND PAREGORIUS, MARTYRS  (Third Age.)  Saint Paregorius having spilt his blood for the faith at Patara, in Lycia, St Leo, who had been a witness of his conflict, found his heart divided between joy for his friend’s glorious victory and sorrow to see himself deprived of the happiness of sharing in it.  The proconsul of Asia being absent in order to wait on the emperors, probably Valerian and Galien, the governor of Lycia, residing at Patara, to show his zeal for the idols, published an order on the festival of Serapis, to oblige all to offer sacrifice to that false god.  HE PRAYED AT HIS FRIEND'S TOMB Leo seeing the heathens out of superstition, and some Christians out of fear, going in crowds to adore the idol, sighed within himself, and went to offer up his prayers to the true God, on the tomb of St Paregorius, to which he passed before the temple of Serapi...

SAINT LEO IV., POPE AND CONFESSOR   ⬅️ Saintly Popes - Index Saint Leo IV was son of a Roman nobleman, had been educated in the monastery of St Martin without the walls, and was made by  Sergius II priest of the four crowned martyrs. He was chosen pope after the death of  Sergius II  in 847, and governed the Church eight years, three months, and some days.  HE MADE IT HIS FIRST CARE TO REPAIR THE CHURCH The Saracens from Calabria had lately plundered  St Peter's church  on the Vatican, and were still hovering about Rome. SAINT LEO II., POPE AND CONFESSOR ⬅️ Saintly Popes - Index Saint Leo was by birth a Silician, eminent for his piety, and perfectly skilled in the Latin and Greek tongues, in the church music, and both in sacred and polite literature.  Pope Agatho dying on December 1, 681, he was chosen to fill the pontifical chair.  He confirmed, by the authority of St Peter, as he says, (writing to the zealous emperor Constantine Pogonatus) the sixth general council held at Constantinople, in which his predecessor St Agatho had presided by his legates.  HE CONFIRMED THE SIXTH COUNCIL HELD AT CONSTANTINOPLE In the censure of this council we find the name of Honorius, joined with the Monothelite heretics, Theodorus bishop of Pharan, and Cyrus, Sergius, Pyrrhus, Paul, and Peter of Constantinople.  Pope Leo II in his first letter to the bishops of Spain,  gives the reason, because Honorius "did not ...

SAINT LEO THE GREAT, POPE AND DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH ⬅️ Saintly Popes - Index Elected Pope in 440, Leo [Pope Leo I.] consolidated the organisation of the Church and its government from Rome at a time of civil and doctrinal disorder: Attila’s invasion was threatening, and the monophysite heresy was abroad. He persuaded the Huns to withdraw beyond the Danube, and negotiated with the Vandals when they seized Rome in 455.  THE COUNCIL OF CHALCEDON The Council of Chalcedon in 451 restated the doctrine of the incarnation, and the primacy of Peter. Many of his sermons and letters survive, and reveal him as a man of clear and forceful intellect and faith. He died about 461.
